Witty's P-51D & Zero

I remember reading on this forum somewhere that Witty had to sell thses planes at clearance prices. Are they that bad? I have th ecjhance to pick up a Witty P-51D called 'Glamourous Glen' but I'm having second thoughts after remembering the post I read. Since I already have th eDragon Mustang, should I bother with Witty's.

TIA for your responses guys.

Norm

Re: Witty's P-51D & Zero

Check out this thread.

The general consensus around here is that Witty's Zeros are pretty good. I haven't seen as much about Witty Mustangs, but Dragon's P-51Ds are the best available, so if you've got the Dragon, I'd say save your pennies for something else.

Re: Witty's P-51D & Zero

I would stick with Dragon where the P-51D is concerned and avoid Witty's FW-190A and P-38 at all costs. On the other hand, I have Witty's first Zero ( 261st NAC ) and it's not bad at all. As for the other WWII entries--the BF-109G and Spitfire---you can do better with Dragon and Gemini Aces in 1:72nd scale.

Re: Witty's P-51D & Zero

Witty is a real hit or miss company I think their Bf 109’s, Sea Fury’s, & Zero’s are their best. If you want a D model Mustang go with Dragon there is no better mold for 1-72 scale bubble canopy P-51’s.

When it comes to 1-72 Zeros you have a couple choices.

Witty (x11)
Corgi (x8)
IXO (x1)
FOV (x1)
Easy Model (x5)

I have seen planes from all of the different bands in person and have Zero’s from Witty, IXO, & Easy Model in my collection. Witty is the best as far as die-cast is concerned but the Easy Model Zero’s are also really nice as well.

Re: Witty's P-51D & Zero

I have 4 Witty Zeros and they are a nice model for the price paid.

Re: Witty's P-51D & Zero

I have most of Witty's Zeroes, so like them a lot. They have quirks, like a left-hand prop, but are well done. (I also like the Fw 190 and think it gets a bad rap, but then I'm not into detail weapons loads and such.)

How difficult would it be to pull off the prop and substitute it with one from say a model kit?

If you pull the prop off you'll find it is mounted on a thin springy wire. I found this out when I got a model which had the prop sticking too far out front, and thought for $19 I can take a chance ruining the thing. Anyway, if you can find a prop that will fit on a thin pin, or can jury-rig a fitting, it would probably work. However, with Witty, I don't think many collectors are that particular. Witty doesn't create models for the high-end collector--they're mainly for sale to people who want a passable model that is also affordable. The MiG-29, Fw 190, Zero, and even P-38 are likeable, just not something to drool over. Haven't tried the rest of the Witty line...

Agreed Celtic,
My Witty Zeros are a nice representation of an A6M5 but if another manufacturer came out with better, I'd probably not keep them. I think Witty's biggest drawback is their plain painted canopy. If the canopy were segmented, or atleast had breaklines where the sliding part is, I think it would make a big difference as the rest of the plane is very nice.
BTW, Great pics!

I just spotted one for sale at FTs so I have ordered it.
Price is £9 so it won't break the bank.
My collection of Pacific birds is getting quite substantial now.

Hurry up with the VAL HM please.
