Re: Witty Wings F-16 Israel Barak

Yes, David is right. I thought later PW powered jets had the big intake, but no. Only GE-F110 powered.

I flew small mouth Block-25s (in Germany and in training at Luke AFB, AZ), and later big-mouth Block 30s (Korea). When Ramstein AB first got their Block 30s in the late 80s, they had a mix of big and small mouth jets, even though they were all GE powered. Pilots who flew them said you could really tell the difference in thrust (particularly in formations that included the two different types), even though it was the same engine. So intakes do make a big difference!

I believe NSI stands for Normal Shock Inlet. That's a term we never used as pilots. To us it was always "small mouth" or "big mouth."

Re: Witty Wings F-16 Israel Barak

I was thinking it might stand for shock, but wasn't sure. Doesn't make that much sense to use as a description, as the MCID I think uses a normal shock too. Can't imagine that the MCID's shape differs enough to act like a more complex, oblique-shocked intake.

Here in Iowa, we had the rare small-mouthed Block 30's for many years, so anyone who wanted to build a model had to learn what versions had what parts, and what model kits to swap parts from. (Luckily Hasegawa's later kits of Block 40 and up include the parts for all previous versions as well, so at least you only need to buy one kit--but you still had to research which parts to use) I snagged Tamiya's big 1/32 T-bird kit, with the intent of buying a GE engine for it to make one of Sioux City's.

Re: Witty Wings F-16 Israel Barak

Just saw a review of a new book "The Modern Viper Guide The F-16C/D Exposed" over at the Aircraft Resource Center website. There is a picture on the intakes as what David has shared. I have both Dragon and Witty's F-16s. They are all with the "Bigmouth" intake.

I still think it would be nice to see an F-16I "Sufa", complete with the conformal tanks and Python AAM's!

Re: Witty Wings F-16 Israel Barak

It looks similar in terms of form to the one we have here in Singapore.
