Re: Witty Wings F/A18 Kestrels <I like>

GBU-12 not cleared for dual carriage on a CVER on a Super Hornet, even though the Legacy Hornet does it ALL THE TIME. Don't know why, but it's true. You can put 2 Mk83's on a CVER, which are twice as big. Very common. (And of course, since it's very common, that means Witty and Dragon don't make it).

Mk83=most common bomb you'll see on a Tomcat or Hornet from about 1990 and later. And not available even in resin to make yourself.

2 x Mk 83 = 1 x GBU-24 (regarding weight). Correct?

Would a load combined of "dumb" bombs like Mk 83 with my already installed GBU-24īs really make sense?

Re: Witty Wings F/A18 Kestrels <I like>

Hornets are often sent out with a mix of dumb and guided bombs, and often have both GPS and laser for guidance--basically "be ready for anything" close air support and targets of opportunity. But that's mainly with 500-1000lb weapons. And I doubt there'd be room for dual anything next to a GBU-24.

You might not like the suggestion at this point, but going back to the inboard tanks, middle GBU-24, outboard HARM configuration would be a photographically proven load. I'll see if I can ask if there's anything that can go next to an inboard GBU-24 besides another GBU-24.

Sigh, if MH hadn't been down all week I could have probably talked to you and gotten the pic of the GBU-24's loaded before you changed them around, sorry.

That´s not Your fault David! In first instance, it is the fault of bad research by the manufacuter (in this case Witty, but it could have been anyone else as well). As long as there IS something that can go under the middle pylon next to an inboard GBU-24, it would be ok for me. Sure another GBU-24 would go? In this case, I´ll start searching for the Dragon Weapons Set which there were included in (and when everything fails: I do have another two GBU-24s, but they belong to my Century Wings Bombcat and they´re so fine, that I truly want to avoid "wasting" them for correcting Witty´s faulty research).

BTW, I can´t go backt to the inboard fuel tanks anymore - I was not able to remove them without damaging them irrepairably.

Re: Witty Wings F/A18 Kestrels <I like>

Good news! Latest stuff cleared for a Super Hornet lets an inboard GBU-24 be paired with GBU-12 or GBU-16 on the middle pylon, plus any missile outboard. You can also put a Maverick missile on the middle pylon, if you can find a single-Maverick launch rail. (they exist, but you basically have to buy an A-10 kit to get them)

You can also put Mk82/BSU-86 but they do not exist in any shape or form for models AFAIK. They look similar to a Mk82 Snakeeye.

Mk83AIR is also an option, but I only know of them existing in 1/48 scale.

David, I guess You donīt have the faintest idea on how good these news really are for me since that means I do not have to search for that f***ing Dragon Weapons Set any more. And, even better, now I can (more or less) proudly present the final result of my reconstructions:

I don't know what version Sidewinders those are, but they don't look right to me. Maybe it's just the mold.

Re: Witty Wings F/A18 Kestrels <I like>

I don't really see anything wrong with the Sidewinder, it's copied from the Hasegawa kit's, which is the best (and about only) 1/72 AIM-9X out there. Maybe the nozzle's vectoring flap mounts are like 1/2mm too long, and it could use a cable tunnel outboard. But it's still one of the more accurate Sidewinders out there, and the AIM-9X is a lot harder to get right, with so few photos of it out there.

Muesingman---how'd you attach the AMRAAM to the fuselage? Simply glue the fins directly, or did you add pins/posts or something? Also---how'd you do the stripes (and fins) on the repainted missiles?

Re: Witty Wings F/A18 Kestrels <I like>

Hey David,

answer to question one: fixing the AMRAAM caused me some extra grey hair, I believe. Just the very tips of the missile´s fins in the middle had contact with the fuselage. In fact, the body of the missile does not touch the fuselage now, but that´s hidden quite well. I applied some instant glue gel to the fins with a sewing needle and that was just enough to fix it.

answer to question two: the stripes on the missiles are simply painted with a little skill an a 10/0 brush. The fins were also being repainted (black and a little silver mixed).

BTW: I took the HARMs from a Revell Tornado kit (ECR, JaBoG 32).
