Re: New pics, FW-190, P-38 & F-15

Where did Witty come up with that top side green on the P-38??

Ron O, check out the link below:
Hope this helps.

Re: New pics, FW-190, P-38 & F-15

You should have gotten the Dragon F-15A Green Dragons. Atleast it comes with an ASAT Missile. I thought that squadron only used F-15A's. That witty's is a F-15C

I'm affraid I couldn't even consider that option. The paint scheme was way too bright. And I realy didn't like the etchings on the back of the aircraft's wings. Plus I always prefer a fully loaded F-15 Eagle.

Re: New pics, FW-190, P-38 & F-15

flyXwire,

Thanks for the photo! I would guess that the top side green in your photo is one of the many shades of olive drab that appeared on USAAF aircraft. IMHO the Witty top side green is not one of the many shades of OD.

The photo begs another question: Where did Witty get the bottom side silver??

In any event Witty has produced a colorful model.

Cheers,

Ron

Hey RonO,
You must also take into account the weather and climate conditions where these fighters were stationed at the time. Burma's environment (as well as other parts of the tropical environs of Asia and the Pacific Islands where the sun is the main adversary) is harsh enough to effect a change on the colors of these a/c. Also, a lot of the Lightnings transported to the PTO were initially "bare-metal" finish, hence the bottom side of these a/c reflect that. I also noticed that the "Miss-V" P-38 shown on the photo above has darker contrast on it's undersides, perhaps it was repainted with a darker shade of colour but which shade I have no idea! I'm still researching that....
Just my .02 cents opinion.

Re: New pics, FW-190, P-38 & F-15

I've got both the P-38 and Priller FW-190 on order but these pictures are somewhat disappointing. The topside green ( olive drab? ) on the P-38 looks either very badly faded or just plain off. Add to this, the noticeable lack of stenciling plus those awful-looking superchargers and it seems that Witty has missed the boat on this one. As for the FW-190, its mottling is very heavy-handed- not at all like pictures of Priller's mount. And those bombs? Was Priller a "Jabo" ( fighter-bomber ) or a top flight fighter pilot? Except for his well-publicized D-Day strafing run over the Normandy beaches, lugging around all of that ordinance might have posed a major problem when he came up against U.S. P-47s and P-51s or the RAF's Spitfire MK. IXs.

Epapazian, I think you maybe onto something here. I think SpecCast may have gotten the correct shade of topside green a little more closer than Witty's (well, at least to my own eyes anyway) and the undersides is a dark shade of grey instead of Witty's bare-metal finish on their P-38.

I'm betting that Witty just screwed it up with those colours. I don't think even the weather can turn olive drab into that colour. Its like as if it were mixed with yellow. And I'm guessing the photo is suggesting a grey underside. but let us know what you find out = )

Well, according to the sources I've gotten info on this particular Witty version of the "Green Dragon" P-38 it is indeed have a grey painted undersides..so yeah, Witty didn't get that undersides painted correctly! Also the OD shade of green is too light. If you go to Tricatus Website and look at Corgi's AA36608 "Haleakala" P-38 flown by Lt.H.H. Sealy of the 459th FS/80th FG, Chittagong, India, 1944, it appears that this paritcular P-38 has the more correct shade of OD green on the topside and grey color painted on the undersides, imho. Nevertheless, this isn't going to prevent me from obtaining Witty's P-38 if it does get marked down in the future. You can count on it!

Re: New pics, FW-190, P-38 & F-15

Got my 190 no. 13 today, and love it. Great paint job and durable. However, the prop/fan combo didn't fit all the way in and wouldn't go in no matter how hard I pushed. The front of the plane looked for all the world like one of those worm-like creatures from "Dune"---- a circle of evil (and ugly) teeth. Anyway, after complaining to anyone who would listen (right, does a falling tree on a deserted island make a sound?), I tried pulling the prop off its mount, and it actually came off after a little tussle. I drilled the hole for the prop/fan post a little deeper, reinserted the prop/fan and it fit perfectly!! The post is made of steel, so it won't break easily. So, if you have a similar problem, know that it is fixable. (A secondary thought: if the props on the Witty P-38 can be pulled off as easily, could some kind of packing be applied around the prop shaft to repair the wobble in the prop? Anyone out there nervy enough to try?) By the way, wouldn't it be nice to have an advocate and inside source for Witty a la Hawk/HM?
