Su-27 Gear up conversion

Me and my bright ideas

After looking at Witty's Su-27, I thought to myself "this would look awesome on a stand with gear up. How difficult could it be to pull the gear off and glue the doors in place??"

Step 1 was removal of the rear landing gear, actuators and doors. This actually went quite smoothly.

Step 2 was removal of the front landing gear, actuator and door. The front door was a bit more difficult to remove than the rear doors, but still not too bad (it had a large tab that was glued into a slot in the fuselage). However, the front landing gear was metal and held in place quite securely. Unable to gracefully remove the front gear, I had to break it off at the attachement base and then grind the base out with a Dremel.

Step 3 was gluing the doors closed. The front door isn't too bad, however the rear doors are not even close to being the same shape and size as the bay openings. I'm still working on the rear doors as they require some scratch building, with sheet styrene, and some extensive gap filling.

In summary, I highly recommend that you do not attempt to convert Witty's Su-27 to a gear up config unless you've got some model building experience under your belt.

Re: Su-27 Gear up conversion

that is just awesome . Wish companies like Witty and gaincorp could get the idea that "gear up option" is something that can pull more hobbyists in

I love it! The Flanker looks totally different with it's gear up.

If only there was a Su-30MK say by Century Wings......

I'm hoping Witty Wings will do an Su-30MK one day? I'll be all over it! Great gear up conversion!

Re: Su-27 Gear up conversion

Wow, thanks for the heads up on the fit problems, I've been considering doing this too.

Re: Su-27 Gear up conversion

twin seats? Su-30s with square fins?
I do hope some manufacturer comes up with one. Witty will have to be EXTRA CAREFUL with the cockpit shape!!!!
