| Re: A-7? On October 20, 1987 a pilot of an A-7D Corsair single-engine military aircraft intended a emergency landing due to engine failure. Due to low weather ceiling and poor visibility the plane overshot the intended runway, circled the airport and attempted to fly to an alternate runway. The pilot, unable to maintain altitude, ejected from the aircraft at approximately 500 feet. The unoccupied aircraft careened off the roof of a building and crossed the street, hit an embankment, went airborne for approximately 25 feet and bellied into the front of the Ramada Inn. The aircraft shattered into many pieces, sending the cockpit and engine into the lobby and its wings to the top of the carport and upper floors of the hotel, simultaneously igniting its approximately 20,000 lbs. of fuel. Nine employees of the hotel were killed, all in the lobby and areas adjacent to the lobby. A history of oil system problems on the plane were noted but no procedural changes were made and no one was ever disciplined in the incident. The government paid at least $8 million to the injured and the families of those who died. | |||||||||||||

| Re: A-7?
The interesting part was that it belonged to the F-117 evaluation unit, which still was "black" at the time. It caused a bit of uproar in the Air Force as there was an unusual unit flying A-7s that was exposed in a very public way.

| Re: A-7?
Ty,...I'm curious as to why you would think anyone would choose that particular A-7 as the subject for a diecast model??.... I remember being in Indy on a business trip around 1990 and staying at the Adam's Mark hotel which was adjacent to this particular Ramada..It was still standing there at the time, abandoned with weeds growing up all around it..My boss and I walked over and just stood in the parking lot for awhile looking the place over..It was quite an eerie experience standing there in the quietness of it all trying to imagine the horror that occurred at that spot just a few years earlier..I had remembered hearing about it when it happened and I remember being quite surprised that the place was still standing, looking as though no one had ever even gone back since that terrible day.

| Re: A-7? Well that plane actually is famous here locally. If you mention an A-7 to people in Indianapolis that know even just a little about aviation if they lived here a while the first thing they bring up is the Ramada accident. I didn't mean it to be disrespectful by suggesting that one. | |||||||||||||
