Witty vs Gaincorp: the better choice?

I own one Gaincorp Su-34 Flanker (thanks to PappyB) in my collection and would like to add some other Russian jets. I own one Witty jet (JASDF F-15 Anniv. Ed.). I am happy with both, but the Witty appears to be of much better quality compared to the effort by Gaincorp. Judging by some of the comments made here regarding Witty's Russian planes, I get the impression they are better than the Gaincorp models which are showing their age (I also checked Pappy's web site for his pics and views as well).

So is that, in fact, the general consensus among people who have collected these models? That Witty is the better choice for Russian jets.

I see some nice planes offered by both manufacturers (but they almost always look better in the pics than in person). However, it also appears that Gaincorp models are also becoming a bit more difficult to find in the US at a decent price.

Any thoughts you Russian jet collectors care to share would be appreciated.

As far as Flankers are concerned, it's hard to say who's better. Gaincorp's canopy is better than Witty's but Witty's fuselage & radome are better than Gaincorp's. Gaincorp's colors/paint schemes are more accurate than Witty's but Witty's have better detail than Gaincorp's. Gaincorp's are harder to find, which makes them better from a collector standpoint. Witty's have much better build quality than Gaincorp's. In the end, it's pretty much a draw. If you really like the Flanker, I'd suggest getting both Gaincorp's and Witty's.

Excellent points, Skid! I have ALL of Gaincorp's Flanker variants and Witty's as well. I'm waiting for a tandem seater Su-30MKI to be made, and don't care if it came from either diecast makers.

Thanks Skid for your take on the matter. It sounds like both makers have their good and bad points (or as you said, "it's pretty much a draw."). As we find in so many cases in this hobby of ours, it sounds like a get what pleases you decision.

Re: Witty vs Gaincorp: the better choice?

I have the Witty PLAAF Su-27 and Gaincorp's Su-33 and Su-34.

As far as fit and finish goes the Witty one looks better in my humble opinion.

No comment on the relative accuary of the models.

Main thing for me as that they all look great parked next to each other on the self.

Re: Witty vs Gaincorp: the better choice?

I have both and I don't think neither is accurate or better than the other, but in a negative kind of way!

I repeat, I have 2 Gaincorp Su-27s (blue and grey Chinese), 3 Wittys (1 Russian, 2 Chinese), and they are all wrong...the more I look at them the more I wish someone else came up with a new version. The Witty looked very close but got it COMPLETELY wrong around the cockpit, while the Gaincorp has lots of QC and moulding issues.

The Gaincorp Su-34 still looks good though: not a perfectly assembled model (also some QC problems) but accurate to the best of my knowledge both in livery and mould (only the second bort-34 is wrongly painted), but the Su-47 was all decals (no tampo nothing dude!) and had all landing gears uncompressed!!! The nose probe also looked like a penis-envy mishap. I would wait for the Witty MiG-29 to decide who's doing better on the Russian theme.

Re: Witty vs Gaincorp: the better choice?

Well disusing accuracy , as you've read, is a pointless endeavor so I will make my assessment by way of general aesthetics. IMHO Gaincorp models look better .
