That plane in its day was the biggest leap in aviation technology ever seen.

Its still unbelievable that back then they could have built something like that, it certainly was a giant leap into the unknown.
That being the case , those pilots deserve our utmost respect for putting their lives on the line.

Ben Rich, who succeeded Kelly Johnson, wrote an interesting book about the Skunk Works. It is amazing to read about the engineering and design that went into the SR-71. Even something as seemingly simple as the engine inlet cone was a monumental design and engineering project in its own right.
