I agree with these choices. I'd also add "The Twilight Zone" and "The Outer Limits" to the list of shows that have stood the test of time.

I certainly concur with your comment about "The Twilight Zone" although I would rate "The Outer Limits" a few pegs lower. One notable omission in my own list, is the westerns, with "Gunsmoke" and to a lesser extent, "Bonanza", being the standouts.

Re: 12 O'Clock High - the TV series

I suspect that 12 O'Clock High's biggest problem was that it lost Robert Lansing after its first season.

Further and in all TV eras cancellation of a show after a short run does not necessarily indicate that the show was poor. Excellent shows that enjoyed very short runs in later years include Crime Story and Murder One.

Star Trek had only a three year run.

Star Trek had only a three year run.

Thanks to the rabid fans it remained ever so popular throughout the succeeding generations and spawned a very lucrative franchise.

Re: 12 O'Clock High - the TV series

Thanks to the rabid fans it remained ever so popular throughout the succeeding generations and spawned a very lucrative franchise.

Actually, "Star Trek", which in my opinion had an outstanding cast and premise, was canceled by NBC after a disappointing second season rating slump caused by too many scripts that took viewers back to ancient Greece, Rome, The Old West and Gangland Chicago so the producers could use existing studio sets, vintage cars and readily available wardrobes as a cost cutting device. Sadly ,there were too many of these contrived yarns and too few absorbing adventures in the future to satisfy true Sci-fi fans. A last minute letter writing campaign by agonized Trekkies, prompted NBC to stay its hand and allow the show to go into a third season. Unfortunately, the producers---feeling vindicated--- took this opportunity to start lecturing viewers about the evils of war, racial discrimination, etc .in many of their scripts and ratings tumbled quickly to terminal levels. When "Star Trek" began to appear as a Monday-Friday strip on many independent channels, the overriding strength of its great cast and laudable mission made it one of the most popular shows in the rerun market, exposing the series to many new viewers and cementing its popularity for all time. It remains a successful staple on cable to this day.

Re: 12 O'Clock High - the TV series

I definatly remember "The Rat Patrol" when I was younger back in the 70's. I used to watch "Combat" when I could find it several years ago. But still the very best is Baa Baa Blacksheep, which became Blacksheep Sauadron when it was re-aired years ago.

Yes, both were nice clean family shows, but the two shows that I still find myself watching whenever I find them while channel surfing, are those great Politically Correct shows from the 70's," Sanford and Son" and "All in The Family"
