Re: WWII big band songs

Here's one set to Glenn Miller's piece. I can't recall the title at the moment...

Little Brown Jug - not bad for a metal head, punk rock, rockabilly guitar freak, eh?

I love the Big Band era as well - almost all music rules IMHO but Glenn Miller was the class of the 40's. RIP.

Benny Goodman and Woody Herman did some wicked stuff too. Then there's Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and one of my personal favourites, Spike Jonze. There's tons of great tunes from that era.

Absolutely, absolutely. I think my love for Glenn Miller sprang from my grandmother's knee. As both my parents were employed full-time and my grandma took care of us from birth to 8th grade when the folks were working and she LOVED Glenn Miller and played his records constantly. I don't mean to denigrate any of the others - Duke Ellington in particular as I love the way his music covers the entirety of jazz music in his lifetime rather than trying to stick with one sound. Sometimes I wish I could pull of the 40's look with finely cut suits and rakish hats but, alas, I am of the jeans and t-shirt techie generation. Great music of a great generation.

PS - Don't forget Cab Calloway - not only did he coin much of the "jive" lingo of the time he could swing like no other!

Plus he was in the Blues Brothers. Gotta love that show.

You sure know your music history, Chiefs! I am musically-challenged myself, but I'm glad and appreciate that my son is a very talented Alto Sax player and pianist, and like you he likes to put on the 'zoot-suits' and immerse himself in the 40's look every now and then.

Alas, my head is full of useless knowledge - . I wish I could pull off the look but I think I'm too old to look cool anymore - my little guys stole my mojo. I've always wanted to learn to play 3 instruments - guitar, violin and piano. I've got the guitar but the other two escape me. Your son is obviously talented to play both the saxaphone and piano - I'll bet he's a very sharp individual as well since, in my experience, pianist are very intelligent folks. Oh, and because he's your son of course.
