Is it me or are those short launches by the captapult? Still the sight of those big birds on deck is interesting. Can you imagine those in Navy blue with white bellies?

Funny that the razorback looks almost like a Hellcat at first glance.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

Re: P-47 Thunderbolt USS Manila bay (WW II)

I was surprised to see they seemed to use the catapult for these launches. You can just see, at one point, what appears to me to be the launching cable attached to the main gear. I'd sure like to find out more about this type of operation...

Fascinating indeed.

Re: P-47 Thunderbolt USS Manila bay (WW II)

There is a famous photo of the Manila Bay with her deck full of P-47s under air attack:

A Google search indicates that the Hawaiian Air Depot modified Pacific Theater P-47s to allow catapult launching:
Other early modifications included the installation of catapult-launching equipment and ignition pressurization systems on P-39's and P-40's for the VII Fighter Command. Much later there would be auxiliary wing fuel tanks, catapult-launching equipment, and rocket projectors to be installed on P-47's
