Su-33 Carrier Accident

It looks like the cable snapped on the first jet....Then you watch the 2nd jet take off
and something fell off his plane and hit the water.

He was a complete fighter pilot.......Colonel John C. Meyer Deputy Commander of the 352nd.

Re: Su-33 Carrier Accident

Thanks goodness for that ejection seat! Worked like a charm yet again.

Very interesting video. You have to admire those guys operating jets off carriers, no matter from what country.

I've heard that they make some of the best. Ejection seats that is.

Indeed. Although the ACES II in US jets is almost as good.

But the Russians give us the best ejection seat demos at airshows...

Re: Su-33 Carrier Accident

That would suck! I admire the amount of training and presence of mind of the pilot to realize "I have got to get out of this thing NOW", and do something about it.

Indecision is the key to flexibilty.
Flexibility is the key to airpower.
Indecision is therefore the key to Airpower.

Re: Su-33 Carrier Accident

If I remember correctly the Russian carrier-capable jets have an "auto-ejection-system".

If the plane goes below a certain height (i.e. lower than the carrier) the system will eject the pilot automatically.

Apparently they had some troublesome moments during calibration when pilots got ejected from prefectly good aircraft.

I have to research some in order to find "proof"...

Re: Su-33 Carrier Accident

This reminds me of an incident related to me by a relative.

Some of you naval aviation chaps may be able to fill out the details but the story is as follows,

During launch trails aboard a British carrier an aircraft failed to climb after take off and indeed plunged into the sea.
As the aircraft sank the pilot ejected thus becoming the first pilot to "safely" eject underwater.
The deck crew ran to the back of the carrier to see if the pilot would pop up behind the carrier, and lo and behold there he was.
My relative said it was a miracle considering the carrier sailed over the impact point.

it came to light that the plane was inverted underwater so the pilot fired out downwards.

Sadly I cannot remember either the plane or the carrier and my relative is no longer with us so I cannot ask him.

God Bless America.

Re: Su-33 Carrier Accident

Are you sure those are Su-33s? Maybe I’m blind, but I can’t see any canards on those Sukhois (video). Don't navalised Su-27s sprout canards ... like those below?
time to get my specs ...

It is never too late to be what you might have been.
