Re: I'd heard that a Chinook could do this....

Now that is a first for me see that done in a Chinook.
Looked pretty cool too ....that has got to be hard for the pilot to do that.

Wouldn't have believed that until a saw it! Wicked! Gotta say that must be a pretty dangerous maneuver.

Agreed, it would be really tough if the waves were high enough..

Just drop the excess water on the nearest bush fire as you head out.

I have trouble walking across a room with a full coffee cup, amazing stuff

It is designed with that capability in mind. Not technically an amphibian, but close. Boeing-Vertol was taking a page from Sikorsky's S-61 and S-62.

You can bet those pajama wearing crew chiefs don't like it. But it proves the CH-47 is a workhorse, so much so I heard rumor the Air Force was thinking of dropping the Ch-53 in favor of the 47,

My brother is (was) one of those pajama wearing crew chiefs (discharged due to an in theater injury after his tour in Kuwait/Iraq in 2003/4) and he related it was a definite pucker factor. When we were kids our parent's took us to Branson, MO where we rode on the DUCKs (DUKW). At one point in the tour they drive into a lake from the boat ramp. At the time my brother was about 6 and I thought we were going to have to strap him down as he had a complete meltdown screaming we were going to sink and everyone would die. Many, many years later he called me after a training session at Ft. Eustis where he related that they had finally gone and done it and made good on their threat to demonstrate water extraction. I laughed my butt off thinking about my big, bad 6'3 240 hardass brother trying to look cool as his childhood nightmare came home with a vengeance! I swear he was more spooked during that phonecall than in every other experience he had "flying north" during Iraqi Freedom.

Thanks for the post, Gavin. I have already forwarded it his way and warned his wife he would probably be hiding in the corner with his head between his knees in the next few hours.
