Re: Sukhoi Su-47 Berkut - In Action

That's really cool to see the video....That is a first for me to see that Su-47 flying.
Still think of it as a Batplane.

Nice find! Thanks for sharing.

Does this plane remind anyone else of 'Firefox?'

Re: Sukhoi Su-47 Berkut - In Action

I haven't seen this video footage in a long time (the video was posted awhile back from another forum I'm a member of) and it never seizes to amaze me
everytime I view it. Russian style aerobatics especially when done with a 'technology-demonstrator' such as the Su-47 is just too cool and a delight to watch.

And the Gaincorp model of this bird ain't too shabby either....

Yes, the Su-47 is fun to watch, more for its unusual shape than the maneuvers themselves who are now far outdone by the thrust-vectoring Su-30s, MiG-29 SVT, and F-22.

Notice how much the wings bend during tight turns. That's both a plus and minus of forward-swept wings. It adds maneuvrability (increased lift), but requires a much stronger structure that a normally swept wing.

I like the shape of the aiplane so much that I got the Gaincorp model even though I don't often buy prototypes or one-of-kind aircraft. I like that model very much, and it sure stands out in the 1/72 collection.

Yup, it's very reminiscent of the phenomenon called "wing divergence" behaviour exhibited by the X-29 when entering those tight turns as well.
The russian designers must have made use of carbon composite materials for the wing structure, and we both know how structurally versitile those materials are for just such an occasion.

At least they've picked up were NASA left off with their X-29 program.
