| Re: F-15 Eagle Lands With One Wing That is truly amazing. Isn't it also true that the F-14 is so aerodynamic that it can fly without either wing? As long as the airspeed remains above a certain limit? (I seem to recall 300 knots being the number.) Any Tomcat fans out there remember hearing this as well, or am I just hallucinating? | |||||||||||||

| Re: F-15 Eagle Lands With One Wing
Not too sure about that, but I do know of an incident where a Tomcat had its wing stuck in the intermediate sweep position (about halfway between max span and max sweep). They whipped out their NATOPS checklists and went through the standard troubleshooting drills, which didn't do anything for the wing sweep. They then managed to land at a very high airspeeed (something like 250 knots as I recall). Everything was okay but the tires. There were also numerous incidents involving Naval Aircraft and folded wings flight. The A-1 Skyraider had one, as did the A-7 and F-4, but the most seemed to belong to the F-8 Crusader, which had numerous incidents. The most noteworthy involved MOH Winner Commander Tom Hudner, who managed to unfold his wings in flight and return to a landing. But the most ironic involved a USMC VMFA-235 bird, which took off with its wings folded, then came to grief on landing when the pilot forgot to lower his gear...talk about a lousy day. Well at least it probably took his mind off the folded wings incident...

There is another story similar to this incident floating about on the internet that happened to an Israel Eagle Driver....I wonder if the pilot being interviewed knows about that. At any rate, thanks for the link, jp. That was quite entertaining to watch.
