1/400 or 1/500?

Which is the better scale, in terms of number of models available, for collecting airliners, 1/400 or 1/500?

I believe 1/400 is the more popular scale.

Most Herpas seem to be 1/500 though. Isn't Herpa one of the bigger manufacturers?

Re: 1/400 or 1/500?

I agree with the gentlemen above. 1/400 is the way to go. 1/500 is pretty much just Herpa with a few minor players. 1/400 is Herpa, Gemini, Aeroclassics, Dragon (mostly old stuff as they don't seem to make much new), JetX, and a host of no name people. In general the 1/400 moulds are superior as well and I believe there is more airframe variety in 1/400.

A few of my 1/400s:

A few of my 1/400s:

Wow, those are nice. That 707 is the original prototype, right?

1/400 it is.

OK, I have one more question.
I have a single one of these little planes. It's a 747-200, which Wikedpedia says is 231' 10" long. That equals 2782 inches. If I divide that by 500, I get 5.564 inches. That's how long the model is, so it's obviously at scale 1/500, right?
That means a 1/400 scale model of that plane would be 2782 / 400 = 6.955 inches. Is this correct, are 747-200's at the 1/400 scale almost 7 inches long?
