Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

Not a problem and with over 750 models by one manufacturer, I completely understand. I had NO idea how many different ships were out there until I started the search for the Laffey and then the Ellis. The ship model manufacturing companies put the aircraft guys to shame. Luckily, I found a copy of the Schley...though after I ordered it, I was very worried, as I couldn't remember if the Ellis had four or three funnels. Luckily, she had four, same as the Schley. Strange how the same class of ship would have two different designs. I guess researching the time period and the exact ship you want is crucial.

The three funnel versions are later conversions. They all started with four funnels. The three funneled ships had a boiler removed to increase fuel capacity and increase their range. That didn't happen until the 1940s.

Schley should be a good representation of the Ellis for at least the first half of her service life.

A tip- if you want to make a nice display try using some of the Plastruct sheeting for water. They make something called choppy water that looks pretty good with this scale. I comes clear so if you put a blue base material under it the effect is very nice. There is also blue colored plastic that you can get to turn greening with the right underlying material. You can buy it from their web site or at just about any hobby store that have model railroading stuff.

Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

Spend an hour or so looking over your site last night.
Never realized how "big" this segment of ship collecting is. Over 860 British Registry alone.
Great site.
Are any manufacturers considering Canadian warships?

Over the years there have been at least 50,000 different models released in either 1/1250 or 1/1200 scale. It is indeed a big hobby and despite that there are still lots of subjects out that still be done.

For the modern Canadian Navy there are some very old models of ships like Huron 1972, St. Laurent 1956, and Alconquin 1973. These are all well behind current standards of quality. A guy in the UK sent me a couple of prototype resin castings of a Canadian destroyer this year but they were fairly crude as well.

Argos had announced plans to do one or two of the current Canadian warships but that was two years ago and now the models have disappeared from their lists. So I wouldn't count on them appearing any time soon. Too bad because the Argos models would have been quite nice and their announcement basically scared everyone else out of the field.

Not exactly warships but a small one man part time producer called Dedo has done some nice Canadian Coast Guard ships. Here is the Martha L Black:

Problem is the Dedo models are almost all out of production and the man behind them has said he won't do any more for several years. So they are hard to come by too.

Would be nice if someone did some of the modern Canadian ships!

If you move back into the Second World War period the Canadian ships tend to get grouped in with the Royal Navy. So you do have HMS Uganda which transfered to Canadian control in 1944. There is a nice Neptun model of her:

There are also wartime models of the destroyers Saquenay and Skeena, two A class destroyers, the St.Laurent and Fraser of the C class, Chaudiere of the H class, and Annapolis and St. Claire of the US Clemson class transfered to the UK. All of these were produced by Argonaut and can be found second hand.

Neptun makes Snowberry a Canadian crewed corvette:

World War Two is much better represented but that is true of most navies in this hobby.

Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

Here is an unusual new release from Argos, the Russian Delta IV class ballistic missile submarine Kareliya produced in full hull configuration. Very few full hull models in 1/1250 scale but in the case of submarines it really lets you see the hull shape and how big they really are.

Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

Here is a brand new model from my own series of 1/1250 models. This was a joint production deal with the German maker Neptun. I provided them the blue pirnts and photos and they produced the model for me. It is the heavy cruiser USS Los Angeles CA 135 as she appeared in 1961 equipped with the Regulus cruise missile system. The Los Angeles was a Baltimore class heavy cruiser completed too late to serve in World War Two. She fought in Korea and afterwards was one of four Baltimore class ships converted to carry the Regulus. A firing ramp was built on the stern and three missiles were carried in what used to be the aircraft hanger in the stern.

The ship was modified again at the end of the 1950s to the configuration shown in the model. The main change being the installation of the SPS-37 air search radar on a new conical foremast. This represented her final upgrade as she was decomissioned in November of 1963.

The Regulus system is probably best known for use on submarines but it equipped the four cruisers and was tested for use on aircraft carriers. It was essentially a sub-sonic aircraft equipped with a nuclear warhead. Los Angeles was the first ship to deploy with the system in 1955- the first submarine equipped with the system wasn't ready until 1956. The missile had a range of 500 miles and had the capability of being directed to a target by an aircraft or flying independently using its on board autopilot system. Aircraft direction was considered much more accurate. A follow on project, Regulus 2, would have increased the range to 1,200 miles with a speed of Mach 2 but it was canceled in favor of Polaris.

It is a sheet of Plastruc water called "Choppy Water" on top of a piece of blue construction paper.

I went to the Plastruct web site, found the section on plain & patterned sheets, but never found the "choppy water" material you mentioned. I purchased an Essex class CV from you, and I think the stuff you mentioined would really help set off my planned plane/carrier photos. Can you provide the code numbers, especially for the "choppy water" sheet?

Blue choppy water = WPSB-408

Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

I stumbled across this thread purely by chance, I couldn't see mention of the following UK sites which are useful:-

Waterline-Ships.co.uk

http://www.onboardbooks.co.uk/Wirral...logue.htm.html

Deal in new and second hand 1\1250 and 1\1200 scale ships and planes.

Ships | Antics Online

New including Neptun, cost of shipping out of UK to be taken into account.

1/1250 Scale Ships
Maintained by a collector of this scale with (other interests as well) worth browsing round as there is a lot of history to be found here.

Dockside :: Index

A UK collectors forum.

I started collecting these ships in the form of Triang Minic in the late fifties and early sixties. Then for various reasons (financial mainly) I gave up until a few years ago. Thanks to the internet and toy-fairs I was able to start again. For anyone wanting to try their hand at building from kit form Len Jordan (who doesn't have a web presence) produces 20th century merchant ships as single piece resin castings at a very low price and of a high quality, available from several of the links above.

Good hunting!
