Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

1250ships,

Do you know of a Wickes class destroyer made by any of the ship companies? My great-grandfather served on the USS Ellis (DD-154) and I'd like to pick up one of these as well. Man, it started with the Laffey, and now this...what's next? Tanks??!!

Thanks for your help!

Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

No one has done Ellis specifically but there are a couple of Wickes class ships. Navis makes Schley DD-103 in 1918 fit. Would cost you about $20:

If you move into the World War Two period you have a very nice USS Ward DD-139 as she looked at Pearl Harbor. This model is from Argos and is $28:

Argos also produces HMS Campbeltown, formerly USS Buchanan DD-131 which was sent to the UK in the 50 destroyers deal and modified to be the bomb ship at St. Nazaire in 1942:

A company called Argonaut makes two Wickes class ships but these are out of production and very hard to find. They do Greer DD-145 1944 and J Fred Talbot DD 156 1942. Don't have photos of either of them.

Finally Neptun produces Breckinridge DD 148 in 1944 fit:

Of all of these the Argos is the best model but you have to like the Pearl Harbor paint scheme. The plain grey ones are probably more representative of Ellis since she served in the Atlantic.

Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

Thanks man for taking the time to post all of that information. Thought I'd return the favor and pick up the ships from your site, but you seem to be out of stock! I was thinking about getting one of these and put it on a nice base with a nameplate as a Christmas present for my grandfather. It's his father (my great-grandfather) that served on the Ellis. I didn't realize how small these are and may have to re-think my idea. Well, again, I'm off to search for some of these.

Thanks again!

Your welcome. Sorry I don't have any of those in stock. With Neptun alone making over 750 different models it is a bit hard to keep everything in stock. Can't promise to get you one before Christmas though so you are best off looking for one in stock somewhere. Good luck!

Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

Hi 1250, I bought the ship below as part of an auction about 20 years ago.
Was interested mainly in the aviation/naval art that the lot contained but also had a few of similar ships as a bonus.
Back in the early 90's I sold the others for about $40.00 each which covered the cost of the box lot.
I never parted with this one and it has always had some pride of place in collections over the years.
Enterprise is written in pencil inside.
Question is, what do I have, and what might it be worth?
Hope you can help.

Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

That looks to be a wartime ID model in 1/1200 scale. It is an Essex class ship, not the Enterprise which was part of the Yorktown class. I'm not up enough on the wartime ID models to tell you exactly who made it though it doesn't look to be a Framburg produced model. Possibly Comet? I believe Comet did have the names on the side as your second photo shows.

It is also possible it is post-war copy of an ID model. It looks fairly crude in some respects which is why I suspect it might be a copy. Usually on the US Navy ships they had a bit more detail present with at least the anti-aircraft guns along the deck noted. But also possible this was an early ID model produced while the ships where being finished.

A big series of Comet lots just sold on Ebay. They seemed to be getting $15-$20 per model depending on condition.

Fabulous thank you for the information.
The wartime ID model rings a bell. Another auction lot I was outbid on was a wooden case about 36" x 36" containing wartime ID models of the German fleet. I was particularly pee'd off in losing this to the national news broadcaster on CBC (Mansbridge) who flew in to the auction hall with his handlers, ran this item out of everyone's reach then left letting his people settle accounts and take possession of case. Still cannot watch him on TV him after 20 years.

Not a problem and with over 750 models by one manufacturer, I completely understand. I had NO idea how many different ships were out there until I started the search for the Laffey and then the Ellis. The ship model manufacturing companies put the aircraft guys to shame. Luckily, I found a copy of the Schley...though after I ordered it, I was very worried, as I couldn't remember if the Ellis had four or three funnels. Luckily, she had four, same as the Schley. Strange how the same class of ship would have two different designs. I guess researching the time period and the exact ship you want is crucial.

Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

Spend an hour or so looking over your site last night.
Never realized how "big" this segment of ship collecting is. Over 860 British Registry alone.
Great site.
Are any manufacturers considering Canadian warships?
