Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

1250, you really got me thinking about picking up some of the carriers from the great battles of 1942 (i.e. Yorktown, Shokaku). I would certainly want to put some planes on their flight deck and I see that Neptun makes these also but there are no pics on your site. Looks like you have some Zeros, Vals, and Kates in-stock, do you have any pictures of these? Are they pre-painted?

Neptun have both painted and unpainted aircraft. If the part number as a "B" at the end it is a painted version. You get three unpainted aircraft in a set, but only a single painted one. I'm low on good photos of Neptun aircraft- I have some real old ones and need to re-take them so they aren't posted on the site. But here is an example, a painted Neptun Swordfish:

The alternative to Neptun is CAP Aero. They are not as crisply cast as the Neptun models but are less expensive which can be important if you want to fill a couple of decks. In most cases you get five unpainted planes in each CAP Aero set. Here is their Swordfish:

Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

The dearth of releases I find interesting in 1:400 scale airliners is pushing me closer to my first 1:1250 model. Just what I needed....another scale and subject!

I've spent my money on strippers, diecast airplanes and camera gear. The rest, I've wasted.

Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

I know this is a relatively "old" thread but I thought I'd ask our ship experts for some assistance. After seeing the Kamikaze episode of Dogfights for at least the third time, I'd like to know if any ship manufacturer has released the USS Laffey DD 724? After seeing what that ship and her crew went through off the coast of Okinawa for 80 minutes, six Kamikaze strikes and three bomb hits, I'd really like to have one of these. I'd like to have one in diecast, if at all possible, but am open to any suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

Laffey was a Sumner class destroyer. In 1/1250 you would be looking for Neptun model 1360 USS Sumner which represents the class. I'd have to do some research to see if Laffey was configured differently though I suspect it was probably identical as Laffey did not go into any yards for refits prior to being hit by the Kamikazes. Here are some photos of the Neptun Laffey. I appologize as they are not the best- they were taken quick some time ago and I do not have the model in stock right now to take anything better. Neptun models are fairly easy to get though might take a few months for a particular one to come in.

One 1/1250 maker produced Laffey in her later FRAMed configuration about 1960. Produced by Sea Vee with a run of 45 pieces. This is long out of production and if you could find one would probably be $150 or more.

In 1/1200 scale you can get one of the Superior models from Alnavco. About a 1/3 the price of the Neptun but not as detailed and you have to paint and finish it.

Once you get beyond 1/1250 you are looking at kits. I do not think anyone has a built up Sumner available. I'm sure there are 1/700 and 1/350 scale kits in either plastic or resin.

Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

This was so interesting I went back and read all the postings. Wow, quite the medium for collecting.
Over the years I have picked up bits n pieces but never really knew what was what.
Thanks for the postings, photos and sharing your website.

Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

I am glad some body revived this thread. Amazed by the detail on these models considering there small size. Ships remind of Fletcher Pratt game, but do not see these being used for that.

1250, thanks for the information! It took a while to click but my wife and I saw this ship on our honeymoon this summer in Charleston. She's berthed at the Patriot's Point Naval Museum along with the Yorktown...The Laffey that is, not my wife!

The hunt's on!

If people are interested I'll post the occasional cool new items as they come in. Just this week got in the various components that make up this display:

That is the Norwegian heavy lift ship Blue Marlin returning the damaged USS Cole to the United States in 2000. Here is the real think via Wikipedia:

Interesting story on the model itself. It was originally announced two years ago and turned out to be much more difficult to produce than expected. So it got pushed back multiple times. Collectors were quite interested in getting it but had to wait. Things like that just don't happen to diecast aircraft models. It also ended up as a very expensive set because of the work it took to do the matching of the parts on the Cole to reproduce the damage. The set retails for $390.

Really neat job on the Cole. Saw her in Norfolk when she re-entered service after repair.

Very interesting, 1250! The detail on that USS Cole/heavy lift combo is very impressive... as is the price!

Nrrrm! Whoosh! Rat-tat-tat!
