Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

Interesting thread 1250,ships.

In the early 60s I had a nice little collection of Triang Minic Ships, which were manufactured here in the U.K. as die casts. The detail was pretty basic, but the range covered a wide field. They were mostly R.N. ships of that era. I remember the Leander class Frigates, The Tiger, The Queen Mary, though I don't remember the rest. I do recall, though, that Triang also marketed die cast docks, quays and dock instalations to complement the ship models. I don't remember the scale, but it must have been about 1.1200, or there abouts.

At an auction a couple of years ago I picked up a small collection of 1200 models from various manufactures.

HMS Bulwark; The Bismark ( both Minic ) and some plastic and metal monstrosity made by Matchbox called a Battleship!
Of more interest, possibly, were the 8 or 9 ships which were very basic and represented destroyers and cruisers of WW1 and WW2. These were very basic, but I could discern quite clearly the various classes of ships which they represented.

I only paid about £12.00 at the time, so I wasn't too concerned that some of them were so anonymous , with no markings underneath.

One interesting model seemed to represent a pre-Dreadnought type, but was a very rough casting.

cheers,

MoMo

I had that one too, MoMo! It was especially crude, I think black plastc turrets, seemed like it was a cross between Bismarck and HMS Vanguard, and had little wheels on the bottom. Not one of Matchbox's finer efforts.

Yes TedinDC, I think that the Matchbox type was an attempt to produce cheaper versions of the Minic types for the toy market. Minic types were of superior quality, and also had discrete little wheel runners which helped to move them about.

I forgot to mention that some new Minic ships appeared a few months ago at one of the toy diecast shops which I frequent. They seemed to be quite nicely made, but with a high price-tag!

Cheers,

MoMo

Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

I am intrigued! I found the following website, which seems to be a pretty good list of a lot of the ships that have been made, including pics:

Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

Another good website is the one maintained by Bob Wiringa, he's sort of the Tricatus of 1250 scale ship models, with a history and statistics about each ship, and several good photos of each: Bob's Ship Collection

He has the models broken down by civil or military, then nation, then ship type, for example here's Japanese aircraft carriers (would look nice posed with a diecast Val!): Aircraft Carriers

We have to thank guys like Wiringa, Tricatus, and 1250ships for all their work at providing excellent references and photo documentation of our hobbies, as well as the folks who run this site and the Steelnavy site. Thanks everyone!

Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

I'm definately down to start a 1/1250 Collection, once a bit more money rolls in. What impresses me about these most is that they are actually made in the West. That fact alone makes them attractive, since they won't be sponsoring slave labor enriching a future peer competitor of the USA. I have already listed the Neptun's I want, and when the funds come available I will be purchasing them.

Got any deals for a fellow MH member 1250Ships.

In the mean time, I did win 3 Framburg ID models, which are 1/1200 scale. They are the HMS Warspite, a Fiji Class Cruiser, and a Tribal Class Destroyer. I got gouged on shipping, the etailer charged me 7.00 per ship, for a total of 21.00 for 3 itty bitty little ships that wouldn't cost more than 7.00 to ship via usps priority mail. Still, they are great little pieces of history, and I've always wanted a model of the Warspite, my favorite British WW-2 Battleship. She'll look great with my Corgi Floatplane Stringbag.

For those who are unfamiliar with the history of Britain's greatest battleship, check out the wikipedia writeup on her.
HMS Warspite (1913) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The aerial photo of Narvik was taken by her Swordfish, which sank the first FAA U-boat kill and spotted for her when she and some British cans annhilated a German 8 Destroyer flotilla.

Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

Hmmn , Just had a quick look around the various makes and spotted the Ark Royal. Brotherinlaw served on her untill her demise. I am really tempted to buy that one, But then that opens the floodgates to others such as the Sheffield ,Warspite and my favourite battler the Rodney. I must think more on this dilemma! Oh BTW Sky nice photos many thanks even if you have now caused me to review the bank balance. Well at least they are made in the west. I have just lost my job to the Chinese.

God Bless America.

If you like the Rodney check out this camo version:

Camo is about as close to a livery change as the ship folks can get.

Those wartime Framburg ID models are quite collectable. The trick is finding them in good shape after over 60 years. If you got them attached to the wooden plinths you should consider removing them from the plinths. The lead in the models can start to break down due to the presence of the wood.

Re: 1/1250 scale ship models

1250, you really got me thinking about picking up some of the carriers from the great battles of 1942 (i.e. Yorktown, Shokaku). I would certainly want to put some planes on their flight deck and I see that Neptun makes these also but there are no pics on your site. Looks like you have some Zeros, Vals, and Kates in-stock, do you have any pictures of these? Are they pre-painted?
