Shipping Cost Shenanegins

I found a VERY desirable Corgi plane on Ebay last night for a Buy it Now price of just $38! I was all set to hit the BUY button but in a moment of rationality entered in my zip into the shipping calculator and got a shipping cost of $43.65 (over 100% the cost of the model)! What gives?! Is that a standard Ebay seller shenanegin? At $38 plus $8-10 for shipping, the plane is a no brainer. At $82 total, I need to think about it (I already have one very similar). Judging by the fact that the plane is still there (I am no Ebay superstar at finding bargains), it's likely also cheesed off a few other people.

FYI - I typed in a zip in the same area as the seller and the cost was still $38-$40 for shipping.

Was it a Heavy or a fighter?
Either way the seller is trying to make thier profit on the shipping as there is no Fee on the shipping. They can be reported for Fee avoidence. ebay is taking a hard line with these types of sellers, because they give ebay a bad name.

Now, if the seller is in the UK, that that price is not too bad.

Re: Shipping Cost Shenanegins

Well, it is possible for the shipping to be that expensive, but it's not likely for a domestic shipment. It's been so long since I've ebayed something that I don't remember how shipping is done, but I think that the seller has to declare a shipping $$ amount up front. So it's likely shenanegins, as you stated, on the part of the seller.

Re: Shipping Cost Shenanegins

An interesting point,
I have found that in the UK the shipping costs vary a great deal but from the US its usually the same every time.
I have to pay for shipping about what the plane costs from the US Ebay or stores. But because of the low prices in the US (often less than than 50% of UK ) the shipping costs I can handle and still get a good deal.
In the UK for something like a Spitfire in 1/72 the cost of shipping can be from £2.60 to £7.50.
I always check shipping and if I think the seller is trying to make over the odds on shipping then I dont bid.

God Bless America.

This is for a Corgi jet and shipping is from Michigan to Missouri = $43.65. I used to live in Michigan so I typed in a local zip to the seller - shipping was still $38+. I'd report them but I'm lazy...besides Ebay should police themselves (it can't be that hard to flag something when shipping is more than the cost of the item).

FYI - Shipping on other similar sized items from this seller is much more reasonable ($10-20).

Could be that the seller goofed when he entered the weight of the model into the calculator. Might be worth sending him an email to check.

Re: Shipping Cost Shenanegins

Was it a rare model for which that price was way lower than usual? Many sellers are putting items at at very attractive prices adn boosting the costs of shipping to cover the difference ... this is one way of "duping" ebay to pay lower seller fees as you don't pay ebay anything for the shipping portion of a sale...

Just take a look at the number of memory cards for cameras that sell for $.01 and then have a $30 shipping charge...

Re: Shipping Cost Shenanegins

I contacted seller after all and the shipping cost was an error - she quoted me $11.50 for Ground shipment - much more reasonable.

More importantly - I just got a Corgi F-4C ANNETTE for $38 plus shipping! It was listed as Phantom 11 F-4C - can't believe it!

That's one cool F4. It was my first F4 and I paid more than double that! Though mostly cause I got it in the UK when none were to be found a year or two back. Great deal!
