Re: Scotland Whups World Cup Finalists, France

Dear Sergey,

perhaps I am too harsh. I'll have to catch some American Football on one of the sports channels and see if I can discern the plays and overall strategy.
I watched baseball when I was in the States and did not get into it at all. It seemed to be a game which required less skills than Cricket and was nowhere near as exciting.

You guys should take up Cricket in the USA and give all those little leaguers a break. In Cricket the batsmen are faced by a wood and leather ball which could kill, you pitched at a hundred thousand miles an hour careering off a hard inner pitch at all angles toward your little wooden stumps. You have to think fast and defend or attack the ball. You then have to run and not be ruled out or baled-out.

Yes, cricket is a man's game.

We do have a game which you Americans corrupted into American football called Rugby. This is a man's game too. It is a bit like American football except that the players don't wear armour to protect themselves. Not a game for whoosies! A game for thugs played by gentlemen.

Then, you have American Football!

You have a game which nobody in the (REST OF THE) world watches.

You have a game which can evoke yawns from corpses which have yet to be disinterred.

Mo, typical Scots bravery !!!! I admire you Geezer - don't mince your words by half, will ya now .

From late night channel-skipping, I've deduced; Two sides, armoured up, playing against one another......

4 or 5 (or if you're lucky) 7 or 8 seconds of action/movement, followed by several minutes, of Two commentators babbling on about (apparently) nothing, then punctuated by another 6 - 7 seconds of action, followed by more (inane) babble, from said Commentators.

Game appears to have more stops, than a subway/metro system.... tripled.

Geez, no wonder the rest of the world, would rather watch pi$$ evaporate.

Makes even the dullest soccer match look like a Shuttle launch.

Sigh.

Somehow, Americans always describe English sports as opaque and unintelligible, and Brits describe American sports as corrupt, derivative, and overly simple.

Sigh.

Dear Bsmith13,

All these sports..namely Football, are world-wide sports. It cannot accurately be described as opaque because everyone understands the rules, including the young Americans who now play it ( except the refinements to the off-side rule )

Cricket is the exception.

The rules of cricket were handed to the English when Britannia rose from the sea and entrusted the nation to flourish with the game. A bit like the Lady of the Lake entrusting Arthur to guard Excalibur. This is one game where it is safe to call the rules 'unintelligible'. However, it has more excitement in 10 minutes of play than you know what!

It all begs the question, why is it that the world plays Football and not
'Football' ?
