Re: Unlimited Supply of Obscure/Niche and Iconic Model Subjects

I wonder how many "new tool" 1:48 aircraft one could do for the investment required in a single 1:32 aircraft????

I've wondered the same roo. I am happy to see HM do a 1:32 line; however, due to cost and size, I will probably acquire only one from each line (two is a stretch, but possibly), whereas at 1:48, I would acquire several. But given two fine toolings with display options, one at 1:32 and one at 1:48, I will go for the 1:48 model... just a preference for the scale.

I would guess that a 1:32nd tooling costs only 20% more than 1:48. But then, you have the weight and expense of the extra metal plus a larger box and shipping charges. The real problem is sales. I suspect that HM would sell three times as many 1:48s as 1:32nds, which would cause them to restrict the larger scale's liveries to the safest options---ho hum.

I'm right with you re. FM,Ara.....I don't own any of their stuff, got up close with their Bf109 and their A6M2 a while back and decided NO not even if they're real cheap.Their continuous errors are amazing for any producer of any product. Elmer!!!! I can see it right now... my dear companion laying that newly released Bf109 G10 on my coffin and telling the gang that it "Just arrived too late for him".....................

Re: Unlimited Supply of Obscure/Niche and Iconic Model Subjects

I hate getting pissy about FM, as they are responsible for about 10 of my 20 1/48's, and I love each of those 10. If FM had a "William" he'd make sure the t's were crossed etc.

I am also not sure why Eagles opted for a non-combatant trainer for their post-P-51 offering. Was that the plane everyone had to have, the AT-6 Texan? I heard that it sold well, but from what I understand about the market, collectors want high performance planes in top ace liveries. I saw one at a show and just couldn't get excited about it.

I remember Harry reporting that Richard Hackl told him the Texans were selling well... but that was within a few months of the initial release. I haven't heard anything since. I'm betting the remaining four will be canceled. By most accounts on this forum, they were not received well. Too bad, really. I thought the Texan a good subject to model. But... there were definitely issues with the first two releases... in design and quality control. I got them both, but have since boxed up the Hondo AFB Texan. The finish suffered which really exaggerated the riveting... it looked pockmarked. If OMI could get a nice NMF on the remaining releases, I think they could still be spectacular. The aluminum finish (fuselage) on the pre-war Navy trainer looks real nice--the aggressive riveting looks much more subtle. The yellow wings, not quite so.

I wanted to get excited about it Elmer but there were other planes in the queue first... then I remembered my Monogram model in 1978 was simply bought to fill out the collection, I didn't really have a passion for it. I support Eagles and my first love is US airplanes but the Texan wasn't going to compete for my attention in the diecast market, no matter how good they made it. I hope it's not their last new mold. If they'd only done the Kingfisher, which I would buy and buy and buy...

You probably reflect the sentiments of many... I also hope it is not their last mold, but I ain't countin' on any more EI models. I think they're done. If they'd only done the Razorback P-47 before FM released its sub-par effort... oh man! This hurts!

I had a Monogram Kingfisher as a kid. I loved it. I could go for several in diecast. I love to see 1:48 diecast of subjects I "attempted" to model as an adolescent. Brings back many fond memories.

How is the Kingfisher not a slam dunk in 1/48?

The evidence:

A US plane, sent to serve a dozen countries.
Small.
Saw combat!
Floatplane or fixed wheel- it excelled at both!
Legit prewar schemes, plus great Pacific combat schemes as markings/cammo evolved.
She's a beauty! I called this one months ago. Bet we'll see it in diecast soon.
