How Bad is Your Addiction?

First, three definitions ...

• Addiction: The condition of being habitually or compulsively occupied with or involved in something. An abnormally strong craving.

• Craving: To long for; want greatly; desire eagerly: to crave sweets; to crave diecast models.

• Fix: A compulsively sought dose or infusion of something. For our purposes, the number of models needed to satiate one’s diecast hunger.

It’s safe to say that, given the above definitions, most of us crave, and/or are compulsively occupied with, diecast models. This urgency varies from collector to collector, but we still clamor for more models.

Question: How addicted are you to diecast collecting? How bad is your habit? How long can you survive between “fixes” before you feel deprived, bereft and depressed?

It is never too late to be what you might have been.

Re: How Bad is Your Addiction?

I've been forced into withdrawal with my addiction for at least another month. It's pending the outcome of a home inspection and final monies needed at closing for a house my wife and I are in the process of purchasing (closing date is August 20th and a lot can happen between then and now). I've been struggling and trying to justify getting the Gemini Aces captured mustang and HMs 1/48 Johnson clipped wing spitfire. Must resist a bit longer............................................ ..

Re: How Bad is Your Addiction?

I'm not addicted at all. I like the planes but since funds are really low, I just don't buy. I have yet to see something I "absolutely" MUST have. I tutor during the summer and save my money to buy anything that interests me. I've bought six new planes in the past year and a half.

Hey man, I feel your pain! We're closing this coming Friday and I've pretty much stopped buying diecast for the past 3 months.
It was hard at first but I have slowly worked through the "withdrawal."
Good luck on your deal! Oh, and have fun packing the collection, it's a pain to say the least.

Re: How Bad is Your Addiction?

I voted not addicted at all. Depending exactly how one defines it, that may not be ENTIRELY true......but I can go months if necessary (and lately, for the MOST part, it's been necessary).

Re: How Bad is Your Addiction?

I had to vote 'not addicted' as the poll did not account for those addicts who buy every 6-8 mos but obsess every day.

I keep telling myself this too..
I was disappointed that there wasn't a "daily" option on the poll. I seem to get sweaty palms if I don't buy something daily, but other than that, I don't have a problem.

Re: How Bad is Your Addiction?

I think that buying a model and working with a model---repairs, repaints, weathering, etc.----are two separate , though related , aspects of this hobby. I find that I can wait patiently for models I like, such as HM's P-39 and Kate---even if it takes months to receive them. On the other hand, not a week goes by when I'm not working with a model---either diecast or plastic---and some weekends involve several models, usually in start -to- finish paint jobs. So, if continuous involvement, one way or another, is a definition of addicted, I guess I'm addicted.
