Re: How Bad is Your Addiction?

A very timely and informative poll. I openly admit that I am a compulsive addict. Ever since I seriously started diecast collecting a year ago, I buy at least one diecast armour model every week on average, be it from local hobby shops or on-line retailers! Even if I am not doing any purchasing, I'm hungrily surfing the internet for online diecast resources or retailer info. I will get withdrawal symptoms if I go into a second week without any new acquisitions.

Re: How Bad is Your Addiction?

Hey man, I feel your pain! We're closing this coming Friday and I've pretty much stopped buying diecast for the past 3 months.
It was hard at first but I have slowly worked through the "withdrawal."
Good luck on your deal! Oh, and have fun packing the collection, it's a pain to say the least.

Thankfully my collection at this time consists of only 30 or so aircraft (all but 3 have their boxes and packaging). Packing those is the least of my concern, it's the moving of the large heavy items and the sore back that I'm sure will accompany it. Oh well, I can't wait to move and hope the inspection goes well so we can begin to focus on packing things up.

Re: How Bad is Your Addiction?

An additional "addict" definition - Addiction can be defined as anything that interupts a major life function - i.e. eating, sleeping, work, etc.

Here's my "addict" questions:

Have you ever called in "sick" in order to be home the day a diecast shipment was to arrive?

Have you ever overpaid for a model - in order to have it NOW - when you could have gotten it cheaper by waiting a few more days and ordering it online? (How much did you "overpay?")

Have you ever sacrificed a meal in order to have the money to buy diecast?

Have you ever made a diecast purchase, knowing that the wife will so pissed she will cut you off sexually for an extended period of time?

Re: How Bad is Your Addiction?

I like the term "engrossed",as in "I'm engrossed with my collection right now". I could easily focus on books as a substitute,my die-cast vintage Grand Prix cars, and perhaps someday, refocus on my 1:16 unfinished Panzer Platoon. I'll own up to the fact that "Something Always Fires The Light That Gets In My Eyes" (RUSH,"Marathon").I LIKE it this way,if something peters out,I just change for a while.I hate TV,and I want something tangible out of my interests. Right now my anticipation runs very high for next months HM 1:48 USMC B'lo,and the CI P36. Unless more "Gimmes" appear,I could easily drift off to buying/building something else for a bit,and then refocus on diecast A/C when my next "heart-throb" is announced.

Gentlemen, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your responses. Gotta thank DAD, in particular, for enlarging on my addiction definition.

So, DAD---my answers to your questions:

No, I’ve never called in sick to intercept a shipment at home. I have called vendors delinquent in emailing my UPS tracking numbers, and I've dropped by my house to snatch packages off my stoop to prevent overly eager locals from, shall we say, savoring my new arrival.

Yes—I have overpaid for a model to get it NOW. Can’t tell you how much: it’s embarrassing.

Nope, I’ve never sacrificed a meal to buy diecast. I have truncated spending elsewhere to buy more models, though.

Never had to worry about the wifey issue (thank goodness).

To answer my own query, I suffer withdrawal about three weeks following my last acquisition. Doesn’t mean I jump on the internet (or phone) and order another batch of models. But it’s there all the same.

I’ve worked it out where I purchase models once a month. That way I get free shipping, it allows me to plan for future purchases, it gives my wife a heads-up, and it effectively extinguishes impulse buying.

It is never too late to be what you might have been.

Re: How Bad is Your Addiction?

I freely admit to being a 'nutter.'

As to 'addict,' no.

But should I ever expand my collecting beyond 1/72 WW 2, 1/48 WW 1, and 1/48 pre-War, then it will be a definite yes.

Answer to Q1: I can confess that I had called in "sick" on one occasion, not to wait for a shipment (usually have it shipped to my office), but to stay at home and admire the diecasts that arrived the day before.

Answer to Q2: I can't remember the number of diecasts that I had overpaid on-line simply because I can't wait for tardy local hobby suppliers in Singapore to bring them in months after the models had been released in the US.

Answer to Q3: Honestly, I have not sacrificed meals to set aside $ for diecasts, but I had skipped meetings on at least 2 occasions just to take an hour off from work to drop by at local hobby shops whenever new merchandise comes in! By the way, I skipped dinner last night because I was too excited after finally getting hold of a Gaincorp Su-33 yesterday afternoon. My excitement simply got the better of my appetite. It was not until this morning was I able to come to my senses.

Answer to Q4: My wife has other ways of punishing me. She had made that very clear that she would not hesitate to "retaliate" if she found out that I was spending excessively on diecasts (she checks all my credit card bills). I knew what she was capable of doing yet I still could not resist bringing home any diecast that I fancy. When she discovered recently just last week that I bought a whole squadron of diecast planes from Racers Den, she promptly announced to her friends on the watch and jewellery forum that she plans to buy herself a Chopard watch with moving diamonds on my credit card!!!

DADose, I suppose I have passed your "addiction" test eh? ...and I stand by my admission in my earlier post...I am a compulsive diecast addict!
