Re: Gotta Suggestion ...

We don't needs rules Gort, what we need are specific criteria. For example:

1) Availability - can I still find this model or is it almost impossible to find?
2) Production status - Is this particular mold or product line still being produced? If not, then it may be considered extinct (Matchbox comes to mind)
The issue here may be that although not in production or available etail, they are still sold for peanuts on Ebay and the P-38, rare once, is now almost dumped. This is a definite part of the formula though.
3) Desirability - do collectors still want it? Excellent! Gone but gladly forgotten should not make the lists. This is of primary importance I think. Badly wanting a $5 model that can't be found anywhere still makes it extinct.
4) Price (thanks parsig) - do these sell for 50% or more above retail?

Just some suggestions.

Very good HotTrap. Guidelines or criteria are both better words for what I meant. I like the list you have too.

Re: Gotta Suggestion ...

I really like this suggestion, too. Good on ya, Gort.

One benefit I see is helping some of us recognize what is truly rare or valuable (beyond its value to the owner) when we sometimes come across an opportunity and are not sure if the deal is good or not, or whether the price is fair or not.

But I think this needs a catchier title, like Jurassic Diecast or Die Cast Dow Jones or MH2 Antiques Roadshow or Gort's Picks. OK, well maybe not the last one.

Re: Gotta Suggestion ...

I think that the thread should be started anew with a name that clearly defines its subject for others who may not know what we're talking about. One idea might be "Lost Diecast Classics". We should also agree on definitions. I suggested that we stick to the "modern" era, starting with the early 1990s. Is that agreeable? As for other definitions, I think that the suggestions about the model being out of production, in much demand and selling for 50% above retail ( or more ) make sense.

Past experience with efforts of this kind suggest that the best way to move things along is by doing it ourselves. Therefore, I think those of us who are inclined, might dig up some candidates and submit them for consideration. Once we go through this initial exercise, we may wish to refine our definitions or broaden our scope to include niche manufacturers. ( Note: It's important to provide whatever info, including pictures, that we can about our candidates, to avoid confusion.

As far as getting members to vote on the candidates, or suggest alternatives, this may be a bit over ambitious as fewer that 100 can be expected to participate---based on past experience. Still, this could make for an interesting and long running thread, so I'm game.

Capital idea, Epapazian!!! OK, I’m going to start digging. Should we start this tread under the “Pub”? Or should it go elsewhere?

And this will include armor, too, right?

If everybody else is game, your “Lost Diecast Classics” title sounds terrific.

Anybody’s free to start this thread. I’m just excited everybody likes the idea.

Hey, guys ... this sounds fun!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Gotta Suggestion ...

I mean can we really call it extinct if it is available at Perry's or Aiken's for 50% more than retail?

If thats the case then we really can't put anything in here, as Perrys seems to have just about everything.

Ooops!

Yep, that do throw a brick through the window, don’t it–?!?

On the other hand ...

Perhaps we can allow for vendors like Perry: A model is still EXTINCT if it’s out of production and practically (key word here is “practically”) impossible to find. Or, put another way, the model is EXTINCT, but it pops up occasionally much to the delight of resourceful collectors.

Under this definition, even if Perrys (or whoever) sells the model, it still merits recognition. Wouldn’t hurt to disclose where these extinct models can still be had—if they can still be had.

How’s that for tip-toeing through a minefield–?
