Floating Continent!

Ever wonder how your Walmart 21st Century models get to the good ol’ US of A? You’re looking at the Emma Maersk, a floating-continent container ship that routinely transports Chinese goods across the Pacific in 4 days. Yep ... I said 4 DAYS!!!

Get a load of this ...

• 15,000 containers
• 207' beam (can’t fit Panama or Suez Canal locks), so it’s strictly transpacific.
• Has a crew of only 13—yep, you read that right, 13—as opposed to shorter US aircraft carriers with
complements of 5,000 men and officers.
• Cruise speed: 32 knots (as opposed to a typical container ship (18-20 knots) on a China-to-California run.
• Was built in five sections and then welded together
• The command bridge is higher than 10 stories
• It operates 11 simultaneously operating cargo crane rigs
• Country of origin: Denmark
• Length: 1,302 ft.
• Width: 207 ft.
• Net cargo: 123,200 tons
• Engine: 14 in-line cylinders diesel engine (110,000 BHP)
• Construction cost: US $145,000,000+
• Silicone painting applied to the ship’s haul reduces water resistance, saving 317,000 gallons of diesel per year.

A History Channel commentator noted that most of these floating continents sail back to China EMPTY. Meaning, America sends nothing in return. What does that tell you about the current financial state of this country?

Re: Floating Continent!

WOW, that is one big boat.

In looking at the right photo on the second grouping, is it my imagination or is that the propeller I see. And if so, is this a photo of how high the ship rides when it is empty? I can't imagine this is how high above the water line it is at all times.

Talking Re: Floating Continent!

if you look closely at the middle stack of containers, fourth from the left and five up, you'll see the container with my reordered Hobby Master 1.72 M10.

Wait, I can see it waving at me !

Yes skydriver that is the prop. As far as the ride height of the ship at empty it does ride almost that high every time. However, It may be a little higher than normal in these pictures because if I remember right these photos were taken when it was being pulled from the shipyard and probably didn't have its full fuel load on board etc...... as it was brand new at the time.

Horrido!

Good one Horrido,

I have just been listening to the BBC news, a nice lady speaking on behalf of the Chinese government stated that without the huge scale of Chinese production
the whole world would be a very poor place.

The world needs China and could not take care of itself without China.
The world would suffer from economic collapse with huge numbers unemployed and interest rates going through the roof.

China has taken on this heavy burden and will continue to support and supply the peoples of the world with the products they so desperately need.

Interesting point of view don't you think gentlemen?

God Bless America.

Re: Floating Continent!

I printed it but I still don’t believe it. Thirteen crew members–???! Give me a break. The ship’s probably wired to the max for push-button efficiency, but THIRTEEN CREW MEMBERS??????

Just to swab the deck you've got to have a small army.
