Some WW II Warbirds Get No Respect

In our many threads and posts about WW II warbirds, wish lists for new diecast molds, etc. some planes with decent service performances almost never get mentioned. Here's a short list of planes that get no respect:

1) U.S.A.: Baltimore, Harpoon, C-46, C-54, Vengeance, Piper Grasshopper, Stinson sentinel

2) Great Britain: Beaufort, Walrus, Battle, Fulmar, Barracuda, Albacore, Anson, Tiger Moth

3) USSR: IL-4, SB-3, SU-2, MDR-6, Beriev KOR-1, MBR-2, PO-2

4) Italy: SM-81, SM-82, SM-84, RE-2001/02, Fiat G. 50, Cant Z 506

5) Germany: HE-115, DO-24, FW-189, JU-188, B&V 138

6) Japan: Lily, Judy, Jill, Frances, Topsy, Ann, Mary, Babs

Am I and, probably, CC, the only guys who find such aircraft fascinating?

7) Bloch 174, Latecoere 298, Breguet 691, Arsenal VG-33

Re: Some WW II Warbirds Get No Respect

I would have to add the Martin Maryland, Breda Ba 65 and PZL P. 11c to the list too. My interest in aviation history is kind of broad and probably why I have a keen interest in these type aircraft.

Brewster Buffalo, Hawk 75A, Fokker D.XXI, Polikarpov I-16, Fiat G.50, Macchi C. 200, PZL P.11c, Fieseler Fi 156 Storch ,,,, now those are real planes.

Re: Some WW II Warbirds Get No Respect

How about these Czech Avia B534 Yogloslav Ikarus IK2 Rumanian IAR-80 The Eastern European airforces at the beginning of the war fielded some competitive aircraft but their industries were out paced technologically as the war went on and they became allied to the Germans. These aircraft served on the eastern front and were exported. The Avia in 1937 was only a bit slower than the new ME109 and The Ikarus could give the PLZ-P-11 a run.

Re: Some WW II Warbirds Get No Respect

The IAR-80 did not load the first time.......US pilots up against it claimed tham as FW-190's late in the war . I like these little known aircraft and agree the PZl-P11 would make a great addition as they were widely exported...The Greeks using them agains the Italians and Germans. If I had the room and the money I would like a 1935-41 Collection - Lots of wars people forget about. China/Japanese, Russia / Japan, Spain, Finland, Balkans countries overrun like Yugoslavia. Early 1940 to 41 before Peral Harbor when the Biplanes were still in use over Malta, Africa, Albania and Greece Everyone in those countries used something from every possible country who exported aircraft for profit.

Cool Re: Some WW II Warbirds Get No Respect

The He 115 and Barracuda are relatively important planes, I am really looking forward to a manufacturer (HM ?) to do them justice...

The Fiat G50 and the Reggiane 2000/2001/2002, being single engined fighters, the investment to make 1/72 models of them shouldn't be too heavy, so one day perhaps our dream could come true...

The Bloch MB174, Late 298, and Breguet 693 would be excellent subjects (But not the Arsenal : It's operationnal use was confidential, to say the least).

More popular French types would have to be made before however (MS 406/410, D520, Potez 63, Bloch MB152...)

The Avia B.534 is a great looking bipane and I would really like to see this one done in diecast. Not likely to see this one so picked up Eduards 1/48th scale kit and probably will do this one sometime this summer.

The IAR 80/81 is another one I would like to see also. Be nice to see one of these done in diecast too, since not to well covered in the plastic kit world either. My interest in WWII aviation focuses more on the aircraft involved in the opening stages of the war. Kind of like the looks of this one too.

Re: Some WW II Warbirds Get No Respect

I have a broad interest in all areas of WW2 aviation and I fully agree with Epapazian when he states that the planes listed never get a mention.

I would however like to make point that the Barracuda was a dreadful aircraft.
Underpowered unreliable difficult to maintain and sometimes just downright dangerous.

Not my opinion but the opinion of some one who worked with the Barracuda during its "unservice " with the FAA.

Good choice with the Stinson Sentinal Epapazian, tough little plane that worked hard without much recognition.

God Bless America.

Re: Some WW II Warbirds Get No Respect

I have an IAR 80 (plastic built) in 1:72 that was put together and painted by someone with passable skills, that I picked up at a garage sale for $3 a couple of years ago.
