Anticipating May tax refund to buy airplanes...not so fast!

I was anticipating getting my economic stimulus package tax refund check on May 9 but just found out that I won't get a check until June 6 to June 20! The f*$# IRS has some loophole where if you filed online and paid your fees from your refund then you have to wait for a paper check instead! Leave it to the government to screw you when they owe you money but to kick down your door when you owe them!

They should have just been upfront about this instead of posting the scheduled refund dates! Is it just me or does anyone else find this kinda crap deceptive? Stoopid government! How's about doing something about the price of gasoline, the economy, unemployment, the trade deficit, our image abroad, etc?!?!?!? God I hate this Congress and President.....does anyone represent the middle class's interests anymore?????

Sorry fellas, rant over.....been a crappy month and on top of it all I'm seriously contemplating getting out of collecting diecasts b/c it's getting too expensive!

I already spent my $$$ that I would get back. It's a 3 piece living room set. Maybe next year when I might sign my re-enlistment.

Can't say I'm surprised, really, as remember W's first "refund" was really just an advance on any money he already owed you....

As for getting out because it's too expensive... I recommend just being more selective perhaps and only buying what you really, really like and keeping your pace nice and slow and matched to what you can afford. (advice I can't seem to follow myself, of course....)

You should consider getting into armor pieces, if you aren't already there. At 1:72 scale, they tend to be cheaper and definitely smaller than aircraft.

Guys, problem is I like everything including armor. Anyway, I will have to scale waaaaaay back and as my final act of defiance I just won an FM USS Hornet on Ebay (was gonna use the refund check on this). I'm cutting back and that's that!

Prices are just getting out of hand for everything and I still have to worry about retirement (25 to 30 years from now). I'm feeling the financial pinch and I'm probably better off than most people (no mortgage, no car payments, no kids, low property taxes, no homeowners association fees & low homeowners insurance, good job & benefits, etc.....so I just don't see how people can afford extras in today's economic climate. How do you fellas do it....are you going into debt, are you selective, forgoing retirement or is everyone just simply fiscally responsible? Please let me know so I can afford this hobby!!!

Re: Anticipating May tax refund to buy airplanes...not so fast!

Well, I thought my collection was my retirement fund...........

I have a separate CC for my "hobby fund" that I am responsible for paying off with $ outside of my normal paycheck -- so I buy something I sell something, or I do a freelance gig to bail me out of trouble... for those "rare" times when more models come in the door than go out.

(And I have a mortgage, kids, and all that other jazz -- it helps having a dual-income household and all those other things are tax writeoffs... or at least most of 'em. )

I hear you on liking everything, but if you are truly worried work on refining your tastes a bit -- maybe trade that 10-gauge shotgun collecting approach in for a .410

I like to think that too JP, but seriously, would you ever sell your collection? I'd hate too see the day where it came down to eating or selling off my collection.....I'd be a skinny sonova gun!

Re: Anticipating May tax refund to buy airplanes...not so fast!

I got mine on direct deposit a day ahead of schedule! We had filed electronically with direct deposit for our initial "refund" Amazing to see the Govt. work,"of the people,by the people, and for the people"............Too bad this is the exception rather than the rule. BTW, who concocted that fantasy anyhow, some Dude named Jefferson?
