Models You Crave

This type of thread has been done many times, but I just wanted to talk about some models I want/have wanted and/ or hope to get.
It is funny but I often find myself looking through Tricatus or old ads and finding some model that completely catches my eye and I wonder why I ever passed it by or overlooked it. Often I guess it is because I think it is popular and I will just get it after I acquire more pressing models that have just been released. I did that with the Fleet Air Arm Swordfish. I Thought it was Legends and plentiful and I would just wait it out for a good price. Well, I waited and waited and the price held firm. After seeng so many US dealers with SOLD OUT in the window I pulled the trigger.
Another subject was the Hawker-Siddley Harrier jump jet by Corgi. They did a modern fighter Legends Royal Navy one from the HMS Invincible and I knew the minute I saw the pics I had to have it. It to me is the epitome of the Harrier in all it's splendor. I was not even crazy about the Harrier per say but after seeing History Channel shows about the Brits handing the Argentinians their a$$@$ in the Falkland Island war I grew to respect the plane and pilots more. I like aesthetics and let's face it the plane looks a little like a mosquito (insect). The fact the Legends model had fixed gear and no fiddly bits sealed the deal. For a Corgi legend model this one is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to find or if you can you cannot get a shipping quote(Jumblies) or a dealer is asking sick prices. I wanted a representative of a British aircraft that was unique and distinguished to put beside my other I dare to say somewhat less colorful (subdued) moderns. It should arrive in the next week and I eagelry anticipate displaying it.
I have always wanted a Fleet Air Arm or Coastal Command B-17 or B-24. I just like the colors. I am too late but it's the wanting that I like I think.....I also really want the Gaincorp F-22 Raptor in 1/72 but of course we all know how scarce they are. Everyone on the planet knows by now I wanted the Century Wings Jolly Rogers F-14 AJ210. I was elated to hear they are doing a US only exclusive. Perhaps I will get the chance to trade one of my extras for a Black Bunny one by that company. We'll see...... The all white PBY coming out is also one I will probably pass on but make no mistake i really would love to have that one on my shelf. I wanted the Altaya Macchi Folgore forever and it slipped away too. I had the Veltro but it was just a consolation that failed to work for me. Another model is the CW Moonlighters A-6. I love the tail. I have the Black Panthers but the tail on that moonlighters does it for me. Congrats to Parsig I would have been all over that deal like flies on well, you know. The Norman Prince Nieuport 11 by Carousel 1 is another model I passed on I hope to get one day. It grew on me. I think down the road i will try to get some show birds.. The Blue Angels F-18 and the Witty Thunderbirds F-16 come to mind. These are just some models I have wanted. I am really not talking about the up-coming catalogue stuff too much. There are really just too many to mention. I will say this though, there will be lots of Phantoms, Skyraiders,F-5's,F-105's and Kates on the list. Oh yeah, I was not blown away by the HM ME-110 too much. I do eagerly anticipate wht Corgi's version will look like. I am hoping my dealer will be getting the Witty Mig 29 Kubinka for me soon. Take it easy and happy collecting.

Hope this is not too off topic but can I suggest you hunt out the book written by Commander "Sharkey" Ward DSC, AFC,RN. titled Sea Harrier over the Falklands.
The book gives the inside story of the air battle.

Brilliant reading.

God Bless America.

Louie, I wish to thank you, I often thought about getting the 'Falklands' Harrier. Reading your post convinced me to obtain it. I also extended this to the B-17 serving Ballykelly, N.Ireland. Purchased them from England, got both for $60 incl. postage. Thanks for the wake up call.

Jim, Jumblies is selling this model for 10 pounds + 17.5% UK tax, that would only apply to yourself. I purchased it today, Including postage, the cost was 15 pounds I added the B-17 Ballygally model for a total of $60 to me. (30 pounds). I thought it a small price to pay for procrastination. Go for it Jim, it's heritage plus.

If I recall you are in Canada, what was shipping on these 2 models? Was the B-17 1/144 or 1/72?

smartd, I failed to mention the B-17 was a 1:144 model. Hope it wasn't misleading. The two models cost 10-15 pounds respectively, less 17.5% UK tax = 20.25 X 1.97Cdn.=$39.89+shipping costs of $20.+cents. For a total of $60+cents.Regarding the Harrier, Aikens has one left at $85US. .......so it was worth the trip over the pond.CHEERS!!!!

Re: Models You Crave

I know what you mean Louie. I always passed on the jets in general but now I find myself interested in Buccaneers and Tornados. I think the paint is great and they are from an era/history that I don't know much about. I love my famous WWII birds but the planes I don't see much stateside seem to be the ones that are interesting to me now as the shelves fill up. Right now tops on my list of oldies are the CC Liberator in 72 and the Norwegian Sunderland in 144.
I also look for the FM SR-71 from time to time and really want one but not for $200. I held one last year and looked it over good and it's just not worth all that to me.

Leigh-Mallory and his big wings! Might as well stay on the ground for all the use they are!

Re: Models You Crave

Louie, like you I often wade through the Tricatus site and ask myself why I never thought of X, Y or Z model until now. I never thought i'd get into 1/144 but fell in love with the first Corgi Herc I got my hands on, the "Deep Freeze" VXE-6 LC-130, mainly because they fly over my home for 4 months of the year to and from Antactica!

I have 10 Hercs now and 3 Sunderlands which are superb wee models.

In answer to your qestion posed on the thread - the two models I crave are the CC B-24 & the 1/32 Grumpy Spit. There are 3 Corgi 109's on my shopping list too, Galland, von Werra & Wespen all of which will join the hanger one day when the right deal comes along.

I think all of us enjoy the thrill of the chase but I encourage anyone thinking 'should I or shouldn't I' buy something to go for it and take the plunge - in a couple of years time chances are they won't be easy to find or won't be for the same asking price!! I have spend far too much in this my first year of collecting but many of the models i've acquired are sold out now in many cases - so no regrets.

As an example - compare the number of CW Tomcats made so far, all Ltd editions & by my tally 19,000 including the US only release. Compare these to the Corgi EE Lightnings - some 50,000 or more made and how often do you see them come up for sale - and at what price?!

The models we see on the shelves now are easily taken for granted but one day will be gold for some collectors

Take it out and play with it
