Silk Purses from Sows' Ears

Have you ever poo-pooed a model, mentally throwing it under the bus, only to discover later it’s extremely cool? That happened with my new Corgi US35307 PBJ.

I’d never seen this Marine PBJ in the flesh; but I did examine pics of it on the net, and what I saw didn’t impress me. Mystifyingly, I detested its dark-blue, light-blue, off-white camouflage job (though I like that combo on other Pacific warbirds). Nor did I groove on the ground crew (still can’t figure that one out). Anyway, I considered it rubbish and avoided it doggedly, though I own and love Corgi’s other B-25s.

Then I bought one at Tuesday Morning yesterday and WOW! Is this bird appealing or what–?!! She’s just as handsome as the rest of my B-25s—perhaps more so. Which leads me to wonder if I’ve shut myself off from other deserving models.

Question: Have any of you guys rejected a particular model (doesn’t matter who makes it) that turned out to be a gem? A silk purse from a sow's ear, so to speak? If so, what was it?

It isn't faith that makes good science, Mr. Klaatu, it's curiosity. Sit down, please. There are several thousand questions I'd like to ask you.

Dragon Armor 1:72 Shermans. I hated them for their lack of metal, and then I realized how crazy-neat they were.

I originally hated FM's B-17's b/c I was mentally comparing them to the Monogram 1/48 scale B-17 model I had as a kid. I got rid of "2nd Patches" (still kicking myself over that) but made it up by recently getting the "909" & MB!

Re: Silk Purses from Sows' Ears

A "deal" somehow always makes a model more appealing, doesn't it.... I mean, I ALMOST picked up that Down for Double P-51 yesterday. Beatiful scheme, I said, who cares if the mold is a bit... dated...

But I talked myself out of it.

The PBJ on the other hand is one I've always liked, and I owned it before. I sold it not too long ago and kind of regretted it. So when I saw it on the shelf yesterday I just had to reacquire it. Looks great in my new glass shelves in my Billy cabinet with the crew working on it... This one I won't be selling.

I have a love/hate releationship with my FM P-51 "Fickle Fanny" -- the FM P-51 is perhaps even worse than Corgi's, no, it is worse... but it is the first "real" diecast airplane I bought and I was awfully proud of it then -- back when I was a newb collector that "didn't know any better".

I've come close to selling it off a few times, and am considering it again, but it has nostalgic value for me that makes it more of a silk purse than a sow's ear I suppose.
