Re: Somebody's out to make a profit.

I dont like the idea of people buying things just to resell them but thats their right to do what they want. And at least they are keeping the manufacturer and the store in buisness for buying them.

Re: Somebody's out to make a profit.

There are at least 3 very big distributors in the USA that Corgi could easily sell these too and probably not as cheap as they had to sell to TM, it really does not make sense for Corgi overall. As far as the comment about Hornby letting it happen, this deal with TM was most likely a done deal months ago.

I suspect the reason Corgi dump to TM and not to their dealers is that TM will take everything in one big transaction. No need to take calls from dozens of dealers, just one call and it the work is done. Not saying it is a smart decision, but I think that is part of what drives it.

I have sold & traded planes I purchased from TM in the past, but that was so I could use the money to buy other planes I was unable to get from TM sales due to the fact a local dealer buys every plane they can so they could sell them for full price. Sometimes you just have to fight fire with fire.

Re: Somebody's out to make a profit.

It all speculation as to whether or not Hornby knew Corgi was going to dump their inventory of planes.

Hornby did say in the press release they were buying existing inventory.

Did you guys see any Buses, Trucks, Fire Engines and James Bond Cars at Tuesday Morning or did Hornby keep those?

I bet the reason for the dump is similar to the last few. Corgi offloaded its excess stock that regular dealers didn't want because they weren't selling. So, they sent it to one mass retailer to fire sale them out and that gives Corgi a nice tax write-off.

I think you hit on it, Harry. Yeah ... tax write off. I never thought of that. Makes sense. I'll bet more than a few loyal Corgi vendors are spitting mad, though.

Good for you -- personally I really don't understand what the fuss is over people turning a profit on models... it's like anything else. Any of you out there that don't think this is okay and you live in the Bay Area -- can I buy your house for it's 1980 asking price Or, how 'bout your Flying Jule Galland 262 for $40 when you decide to part with it...

Every now and then I do a small bit of speculation, with the goal of trying to pay for planes I bought or want to buy. Example:

I saw a Corgi B-25 go for $132 on ebay a few weeks ago. So I bought the same one from an online shop that still had 'em in stock for $60 -- and I bought a Pistol Packin' Mama B-24 I've always wanted from the same place. When they got here I put the B-25 right up on ebay and promptly got $115 for it. So my PPM ended up costing me I think $10. The wife said "good job!" and didn't complain about an extra model in the house...

Now what's wrong with that

Did the wife happen to take a gander at that B-24's nose art? The gal, on the nose, was packin' a lot more than pistols.

Naw, she doesn't even look at the models anymore --- but my screensaver is Elvgren pinup art and she doesn't mind that... so I think I'm safe

That's good! IMO, PPM was Corgi's best B-24 release to date.

Funny airplane art story... A woman came in my store, with her 11 year-old son, so he could pick out something for his birthday. He handed Witty's "Dirty Diana" F-16 to his mom and she brought it up to the counter to pay for it. I pointed out the tail art, to the mom, who promptly told her son to pick out a different plane. He went home with Dragon's Wisconsin ANG F-16 instead.
