Re: PBS Series: Carriers debut tonight

This may sound bad and no, I never served but...

As someone who has taught for over 10 years now and I'm 35 years old, this seems alot like a floating high school. Holy drama!

Maybe it's the production and not really like that but my God. So much policing of behavior, even cleanliness? Really?

The closest I ever got to signing up was after college, a major transition point, and I did not go through with it. I got a job and graduate school and well...
Some of my high school friends were getting out about the time I graduated and did not have too many positve things to say too... I don't remember specifics really.

I always heard that if you went in with a college or graduate degree, you get to become an officer (Is this a sure thing?) which might make the experience different from what those kids go through on the show.

This post is in no way intended to be a jab at the military. Just wondering how much of the show is show and how much is realistic?

Re: PBS Series: Carriers debut tonight

Believe it about the cleaning. Sailors are CONSTANTLY cleaning their ship. At least the Nimitz isn't the newest carrier in the fleet (aka the "showboat"); then these folks would be doing even MORE cleaning!
I couldn't tell ya about the drama part, I left the Navy before females were assigned full time to the carriers.

Ayuh. Plenty of fresh paint. Willing hands? Depends on what was being painted...

Re: PBS Series: Carriers debut tonight

I watched the first 40 minutes, but it couldn't hold my interest so I shut it off. (Not enough aircraft) Did it get any better?

Re: PBS Series: Carriers debut tonight

A good friend, a retired Chief Warrant Officer IV, enlisted as an Ordinary Seaman and worked his way up to the Commissioned rank. Along the way, he did seven combat cruises on aircraft carriers working as a nuclear weapons specialist. In between cruises, he served on several shore establishments at home and abroad, including a Pentagon tour and also managed a significant part of the Nation's nuclear weapons stockpile. Recently, he published his autobiography; when I read it, I was amazed than anyone could give so many years of his life in such a tightly controlled and disciplined atmosphere and still come out sane and smiling. The first two episodes of "Carrier" confirmed just what he says in his 424 page book "Brotherhood of Doom" about the continuous striving for advancement, family problems due to long separations and crew relationships.. In his 30 year career, he was awarded 29 medals and ribbons plus a variety of Commendations etc.
