Navy refueling at Air Force Bases????

I had a customer in my store about an hour ago. As he was browsing, he said that he used to refuel A-4 Skyhawks & A-6's in the '70s when he was overseas. I asked him which carrier he was on and he said that he wasn't on a carrier-- he was in the Air Force and refueled Skyhawks and Intruders at the AFB he was stationed at. At that point, I didn't bother to ask him which AFB he was stationed at as I figured he was high on meth-- something that is quite common here in Phoenix.

Did the Navy routinely refuel A-4s & A-6s at Air Force Bases in the 1970's?

When I was stationed at Castle AFB back in the way back machine, well you could always tell if the tankers had been refueling Navy birds. Coming home with the droopy basket on their booms.

Brewster Buffalo, Hawk 75A, Fokker D.XXI, Polikarpov I-16, Fiat G.50, Macchi C. 200, PZL P.11c, Fieseler Fi 156 Storch ,,,, now those are real planes.

Yes, well, the Philippines was a frequent port-of-call back then.

Anyhow, this guy was not part of an Air Force tanker crew. He was ground personnel. Did the Navy routinely land at AFBs to refuel, overseas, in the 1970's??

Re: Navy refueling at Air Force Bases????

It's common practice for aircraft from one service to be refuelled at a base belonging to another service. For example, Air Force airlifters go to Navy and Army bases all the time. It is no problem getting fuel; you just gotta make sure the paperwork is in order.

Re: Navy refueling at Air Force Bases????

I once was on a "Air Assault" ( CH-47 and UH -60 ) from Ft Campbell to some hole in Alabama. We stopped off at a civi airport to top off. As long as said airfield gets paid, what do they care? I've seen Navy birds here at Ft. Benning getting gas. We're all one big happy team.

See ya all in about 15 months!!
