Re: How About An Annual Forum-Hosted Contest?

I guess a couple of these would be interesting to our general populace, like the most unusual item in a collection and the most creative display. But I haven't seen a whole lot of folks doing repaints, adaptions and fixes to a diecast model. I'd say most of the people on the forum buy diecast so they don't have to build models or do repaints and fixes to them. We could have these contests, but the contestants would only be very few people, while I'd think we would have a much larger entry on the most unusual model or the most interesting display.

P.S. - Personally, I just don't understand why someone would pay mucho $ for a pre-painted diecast model, then totally repaint it, when they could buy the model kit for a lot less money and just paint it themselves the first time. To me it's like getting a pizza delivered, then scraping off the cheese and toppings, putting your own on and baking it again. Just bake it from scratch - cheaper and less time.

What if you wanted a plane in the markings of a favourite pilot or particular group that is not made by anyone?

If you have the skills you can redo a model in those markings and you would have a "diecast model".

Plastic indeed!

My sentiments, exactly, Jim.

Aye, there's the rub!

" If . . . "

That's the reason I buy diecast made by someone else.

I think that our collective opinion regarding the best new diecast aircraft or AFV models introduced each year would generate a lot of debate and interest-----especially if we issue a press release to the various modeling magazines and the sellers announcing our verdict. Which, of course would draw attention to this forum ( new members?) and to the hobby. As for the repaint, repair, makeover categories, since I do a lot of these I follow the presentations of other members rather closely so I can learn better ways to execute my own redos. I think you would be surprised at how many submissions we would get in these categories. As has been suggested, we could also open this up to include kit-makes. Again, I believe we would get many submissions.

I happen to believe that we as a forum should explore ways to promote our hobby and exert more influence on those who make the products we buy. That's why I supported the idea of an organized poll of most wanted diecast planes last fall and suggested that we might work with a manufacturer on a specially commissioned model in another thread. Neither idea gained traction. So I'm trying another approach---this time with an idea that should be easier to organize.

Will I be heartbroken if my contest idea isn't deemed worthwhile? Nope. Like the energizer bunny I can take a licking and go on ticking. I just wanted to make my motives clear.
