Louie, does the Witty A6M Zero really rank as your #4 "perfect" model? You really need to see the Marushin 1:48 scale Zeros like the one in my avatar. They are very nice if you don't mind the lack of cockpit detail which I had added.

Hmmmm.... should a model modified by a pro count in this discussion?

No...but you know I love that model! Any chance to talk about it and there I am! LOL But...seriously, the Marushin models are some of my favorite diecast even though they lack engine and cockpit detail - especially my Betty. Just look at that fine panel line and fabric detail! They are also solid metal with no seams on the fuselage (except where the wings meet it). I agree with Louie too - love the Zero!

Re: Perfect diecast?? Popicock I say!!

Ok it seems with every release or expected release, it gets torn apart from the get go. So I want to know what diecast plane is perfect. I want pictures and an explaination as to why its the bees knees. I'm just not convinced there is a "perfect" diecast model out there. Way too much huff and puff for toys gentlemen.

AGREE AGAIN SHAWN!!!......Disatisfaction will surely occur if we accept opinions as a yardstick to the quality of said product I've read so many bad opinions of the Corgi Mustangs. I own a bunch of them. Should I get rid of them. I think not. I like them. It's a worthwhile hobby, but chasing minuteness in a 1:72 model ( Mustang) is quite futile.

I know that I've learned my lesson. This forum is no longer a place to share your negative opinion about a model unless you personally own it. That's why I have pledged to myself to NEVER post any remarks about a certain plane unless I own it and can support my opinion either with pictures or accurate scale drawings. In regards to Corgi's P-51D Mustangs, I own six. While they are not my favorites by any means, I like them enough to get some enjoyment out of them. I just prefer my Matchbox Mustangs a great deal more. This is just a matter of personal preference and taste - I'm not trying to criticize anyone who likes the Corgi Mustangs.

As to a perfect diecast, the only plane I have ever purchased that I "personally" think is perfect is my 1:72 scale HobbyMaster SBD-3 in the prewar colors from the USS Lexington. The colors are beautifully executed, the model looks really accurate, and yes, I DO like the inked panel lines. I wish the rear gun was deployed, but in the stored state, it's accurate.

Another model that might make this list would be the Corgi Vickers Wellington. Impressive models and nicely detailed.

Brewster Buffalo, Hawk 75A, Fokker D.XXI, Polikarpov I-16, Fiat G.50, Macchi C. 200, PZL P.11c, Fieseler Fi 156 Storch ,,,, now those are real planes.

Re: Perfect diecast?? Popicock I say!!

I am just being realistic.. From a general point of view, we can't expect these to be "museum replica" perfect for $40 (average) and we shouldn't expect it,

I couldn't agree with you more there, perhaps somebody should post this at the head of the forum for all rivet counters to read!
Sorry I'm not trying to sound harsh but it's gotten to the point where I feel some on this forum are more into the hobby of nit packing & bashing models than actually collecting.
This hobby to me a is a welcome break from all the other real life stress & problems in life, but when people get on here & get so critical & unrealistic about their expectations of a $40 models it kinda takes the fun out of it.

Until we get models with working engines and little tiny pilots to fly 'em (and, of course, Purina Pilot Chow to feed 'em) there will be room for improvement -- but that HM pre-war Dauntless is one bee-yuu-ti-ful model. I think Corgi's Swordfish is on a par with it, but the pre-war Dauntless is more striking. I'm always amazed at how good it looks when I pick it up and take a good look at it.

Re: Perfect diecast?? Popicock I say!!

Until someone invents a machine to shrink a real airplane down to model size (1/72nd, 1/48th; whatever) there will be no such thing as a "perfect model". I'm not a rivet counter; but I want models with no defects that are READILY apparent. I want models that have the "basics" right- accurate color (unlike Corgi's Iraqi Freedom B-52), proper parts alignment and fit (i.e. the horizontal stabs parallel to the wings, unlike the HM Skyhawks that I have), and correct general shape for that particular variant (unlike the hunchback on the earlier single seat FM Mirage IIIs-see B11E368 Dassault Mirage IIIC, Colmar 1963).
I'm not the type to go over every model I buy with a magnifying glass looking for defects. As long as it meets the criteria listed above, with no shortcomings apparent to the naked eye (and it arrives unbroken), then I am satisfied.

Re: Perfect diecast?? Popicock I say!!

We have to remember that in shrinking a model down to lets say 1/72 , the overall look of the plane can become distorted.

Sometimes a little artistic licence is needed to maintain the right "look".

We are lucky in that there are so many good accurate models out there, Swordfish , Dora, Dauntless, Dragon P47s, well make your own list.

If I was to pay $1000 I would want extreme accuracy in a model but for $40 I can compromise.

Looking at my collection there are only 2 models (FM Spitfire, Ixo H219) and I would consider as total disasters so I guess I am a satisfied collector.

Re: Perfect diecast?? Popicock I say!!

After reading about Corgi’s near-perfect Swordfish (and me not owning one), I’m convinced I made a monumental mistake.

As for perfect models, we’ll never find one. But Dragon Armor’s 1/72 AFVs, plastic and all, come as close to perfection as any. Honestly, I marvel over their exquisitely detailed Hanomag halftracks and incredibly beautiful Nashorns. These and other DA models are genuine masterpieces, right down to their rivets and tracks and gifted camouflage application—not to mention their incredibly deft weathering. Dragon have truly outdone themselves; I congratulate these guys for producing small treasures.

If any of you have ignored Dragon Armor, I respectfully suggest you reconsider. Much of the line is still available (some of it at ridiculously low prices). But I’d move on it soon: if Dragon opts out of their 1/72 line for their 1/35 tanks, stock will evaporate as prices spike.

As for finding fault with models, I have to agree with those who find the exercise tiring. I remember one member thrashing 21st Century 1/32 warbirds and found myself wondering why the heck I’d ever purchased one. But then it occurred to me that I find them incredibly beautiful and deeply satisfying, and whatever this individual had to say was—well—his opinion. Not mine.

So I’m all for members saying what they think. I would ask, however, request that before anyone chops a particular model to pieces, they actually own the thing. Otherwise, their opinions are meaningless.

It is never too late to be what you might have been.
