Question about P-47 variants

Hi

What do the numbers at the end of certain P-47 mean?

Like "22" in this case:

Republic P-47D-22 Thunderbolt

I am trying to establish a list of which variants to look for for each plane I want.

Thanks a lot

Patrick

Hi Patrick.

It stands for "Block-Numbers" (i.e. production-run 'batches', within the factory)

Like for example, Boeing B.17's, where after a "run" they may/might implement change(s) to the basic airframe.......

i.e; Boeing B.17 F.-5-BO = (airframe serial numbers 41-24390 (to) 41-24439);

"Circumferential armour at waist guns added & No.3 Bulkhead armour, deleted"

(these are the 'changes' within 'Block-5' Boeing B.17-'F's built at the Vega production-plant)

Hope that helps ?

Hi

It does indeed help. I just have to find out now what each number modification was, to see if it's a visually different plane.

Thanks again

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

Try Joe Baugher's web-site:

Joe Baugher's Home Page

It contains a massive and comprehensive serial number data base which contains all block numbers, and essays on many WWII era aircraft that gives serial ranges for different variants. There is a lot of information there.

Here is the link to his P-47D essay. You may find what you are looking for here:

Elmer

That's indeed a goldmine for a variant freak like me.

Thanks again
