| Re: Scary Landing In the mid 1990s I was flying onto Nashville during a pretty bad thunderstorm in a 737. We were on final approach - landing gear down, flaps extended - and were over the final marker. I could see the end of the runway. All of a sudden the gear and flaps came up and the plane banked to the port at such a severe angle that we had to hold onto the seat rails and things flew out of the overhead compartments. I could see the wingtip pointing directly at the runway below. Needless to say there was alot of screaming and yours truly had a death grip on the seat rails. We did a 180 and eventaully leveled off. The pilot came on that point and stated the he felt that we should not land due the fact that a tornado had touched down on the opposite end of the runway. We approved of that decision. | |||||||||||||

| Re: Scary Landing Cross-wind gusts are a big problem. A random force that as soon as you compensate it's gone and you have to compensate again. The gusts can be pushing you up or down in addition to sideways. Steady cross-winds are a piece of cake. Point the plane in whatever direction you need to so it tracks down the center line of the runway, then kick her around with the rudder just before touchdown so the wheels line up with the direction of travel. Keep the up-wind wing down a bit so she doesn't blow over. There are specified limits to the maximum cross-wind component each type aircraft can safely accommodate. But an unexpected gust at the critical moment is when the person in the front left seat earns most of their salary. | |||||||||||||
