What Do Diecast Marketers Have Against these Aircraft?

I was compiling a list of warbirds not rendered in diecast in the "modern diecast era"---since 1995.-- or scheduled for release in 2008. If you count Atlas, Italeri, Altaya/IXO and Model Power you eliminate huge numbers of planes that the diecast "Establishment" ( Corgi, Dragon, Hobby Master, Carousel 1, Gemini, etc ) hasn't touched yet. Still, there are glaring omissions that fill my list of famous warbirds that have been excluded so far. Here are my top ten diecast wannabes. Frankly, I dont see any sensible reason why these planes have been ignored for so long. Size can't be an issue since larger planes can be done in 1:100 or 1:144, if necessary.

1) A-20
2) PE-2
3) DO-17Z
4) F-105
5) B-47
6) SB2C
7) B-36
8) Tojo
9) F-106
10)Mirage F.1

Re: What Do Diecast Marketers Have Against these Aircraft?

I know exactly how u feel. There are gaps in my collection that need to be filled. But it can only be filled if the companies would just make the planes that have been ignored for so long for a reason I do not know of. My hope is that if they do make these ignored planes that they be in a 1/72 scale since I only collect in that scale. My top 10 planes are.......

1. B-29 Superfortress
2. P-61 Black Widow
3. G4M Betty
4. A-1 Sky Raider
5. A-20 Havoc
6. A-26 Invader
7. D3A Val
8. P-59 Airacomet
9. P-63 Kingcobra
10. SB2C Helldiver

1/72 is the MASTER scale!

Of course, when I included Atlas, Italeri, Altaya/IXO and Model Power, this eliminates all but nos. 5, 8, 9, and 10 on your list. Not that I wouldn't trade in my Model power P-61 or my Atlas and Model Power Bettys in for a 1:72nd scale Hobby Master or Corgi in a heartbeat. I think that we will soon have some of these holes filled in by "quality" conscious diecast marketers. HM's decision to offer us a Kate is a good omen, especially if this stirs Corgi to make an effort to reorient its efforts towards the worldwide market.

Yeah I do agree, that HM finally making a Kate is a good sign. hopefully it will lead to more planes that are waiting to be made.

Aside from us nutters here at the MH II, how big is the market? These diecast companies seem to be risk-adverse.

You beat me to it. I'd welcome those birds, but a wider audience might not.

Anything for a weird life.

Apart from a few Century Wing models which sold out of 1000 copies many CW are still available, so it makes you wonder if manufacturers will take a chance on what could be less likely subjects.
The price points clearly take diecast out of the world of toys. The marketplace would be collectors like those known here and on other forums and the lurkers on these sites. Age old argument how big is the collector market and how responsive should manufacturers be to our requests?

Re: What Do Diecast Marketers Have Against these Aircraft?

The fact that Hobby Master and Corgi are putting out some planes that are less than mainstream gives me hope that some of the less well know aircraft may just have a chance at getting produced. I am a huge fan of the Brewster Buffalo and to be honest, just a couple of years back I would have never thought that any company would produce one. HM has been putting out quite a few molds that are completely new as far as airframe types go. Corgi with its Swordfish and Gloster Gladiator are another good example. The Blenheim Mk. IV is another good example of breaking from the business as usual formula. Have to admit I am feeling that there might be some nice diecast surprises coming out in the future. Just a matter of hoping that the plane you want makes the cut.

Yeah the ones you mentioned that have been released are nice. I just hope that sales don't tank and they start to pull in their wings to safer models. I collect Spits etc but one does need variety to round out a collection.
