Re: Oops an earthquake!!!!

Glad to see all is well with you Jim..
Living up here in Northern Calif we seem to get earthquakes a lot more now then we used too.
But there little like 3.5 to 4.0 type...You know Fly i was on the north end of that Bay bridge in 1989 and no
more then 5 mins later that earthquake hit and cars were rolling all over the road felt like i had a flat tire at first..
Very uneasy feeling too.

Re: Oops an earthquake!!!!

I very much agree with you Hornchurch, especially your last two paragraphs.

We just don't see half of what our brothers over the water see and experience, so we are just not used to it when we do, though these do seem to be arriving more and more frequently over here.

Having lived many years in California, I experienced my share of earthquakes while there. I've been thru tornadoes, blizzards, hurricanes and even a fire, but nothing spooks me as much as earthquakes.

There is no warning whatsoever,
You go from everything being normal
to all of a sudden the world seems to have come off its axis.....
and there's nothing you can do but ride it out and wonder "is this it?". I can remember once sitting there and seeing the walls of the room undulating like waves on the ocean (really weird). The best are the ones that wake you out of a sound sleep in the middle of the night. Very difficult to get back to sleep when your heart's racing about 200 beats per minute.

Glad no P-40s were lost, Jim....

Good posts, those two = pretty-much sums it ALL up.......!!!!!!!!

We've got it 'easy' over here (England) - but that was just SO FREAKY - I'm in my mid-forties; & I've NEVER had my house (any) feel like it's about to shake 'itself' to death with NO warning & for NO apparent reason ????????????
Walls shaking, roof about to collapse..... wassalthatabout, then ??????

FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE IT'S EVER HAPPENED - so weird, the experience... ? - wasn't till I switched on the National-News earlier this morning, they 'explained' & then (suddenly) everything became crystal-clear !!!!!!!

Welcome to this wonderful-forum 'Snipe6' - & your initial posts (other threads) have been interesting ¬!!!!!!!!

Skunky; no worries, mate, as Jim can now (currently) buy ANY 'F.M' P.40 'Hawks' at £15 a hit !!!!!!!!!!!!

GMP, aside, he's prob' got 'dross' anyway ???????????

Where's the "Red-Rag-To-A-Bull" icon, anyhow ????????? LOL !

I can't even start to imagine SKUNKY what you've been through and experienced. That was my first, and it was nothing at 5.2 compared to some.

Re: Oops an earthquake!!!!

Of course, even a dark cloud can have a silver lining. A few years ago my mother-in-law came to stay for an extended visit. The second night I was sitting on the couch talking with my brother on the phone while my wife and mother-in-law visited. A strong quake occurred and things were swaying pretty good. I'm a lifelong California resident so I'm used to it- kept chatting with my brother like nothing happened. My mother-in law, on the other hand, turned white as a ghost. Next morning, she caught a flight back home.

Re: Oops an earthquake!!!!

We also experienced a quake here in the SL Valley a few days ago. It was fairly early in the morning, I was getting ready for work, my daughters were just about to get out of bed; all of a sudden they both started to scream "EARTHQUAKE!" I thought "what thu ____??" I didn't feel anything. They came running into my bathroom, "Daddy, did you feel the EARTHQUAKE!!??" I replied, "what are you two talking about??" They frantically screamed "our beds were shaking! How come you didn't feel it?" Beats me. You know how girls are, probably the garbage truck rumbling down the street.

Anyhoo... I kiss the little darlins goodbye, get in the car, head out for work, and turn on the news. About two minutes later... breaking news... an earthquake of 6 something rocked Wells, Nevada. I mean, ROCKED! Not one building in the downtown section escaped unscathed... all damaged to the point of being uninhabitable (at least thats what the news said). We live on the Wasatch Fault Line, so Earthquakes are spooky things for us... although I have never experienced the likes of the shaking you boys have described.

After work, I came home to inspect the diecast. The only damage I could find: one starboard flap fallen off my Dragon P-51 Big Beautiful Doll! Figures. I should have glued that sucker on years ago.

Glad you boys in the UK are OK.

Re: Oops an earthquake!!!!

Well, we're known as the 'shaky isles' over here given that we're on the Pacific 'Rim of Fire'. No recent large earthquakes in Auckland although Civil Defence is currently planning a large training exercise for when the next volcano decides to make an appearance - Auckland is built around (and on) numerous extinct volcanic cones. The last big volcanic eruption formed a large island off the coast (Rangitoto - approx. 600-800 years young and currently dormant) - an iconic part of the Auckland skyline.

The Auckland War Memorial Museum has a really good simulation where you sit in a 'living room' watching TV and looking at the beautiful sea view across the Hauraki Gulf. The TV 'news' shows footage of traffic congestion as people leave the city (as a result of warnings that something is happening). The entire room starts to shake and then an eruption starts beneath the ocean, steam rises off the surface of the sea and a black cloud of ash and gas erupts (viewed through the large [LCD] 'windows'). The cloud moves at 'supersonic' speed and heads towards you like a scene from a science fiction movie - everything goes black and 'finis' .

One sheep to rule them all ...

Post Re: Oops an earthquake!!!!

I had just got to bed when it started, cracking & creaking in the loft & the sound of birds taking flight jolted me wide awake, a quick survey in the loft & outside in the morning revealed no damage to anything.

Theres no such thing as dross P40s, even the IXO has its good points (erm give me some time and I will think of some er well maybe one, erm , yes hey its a long tail one thats worth something).

Just how many FM P40s would I want even at £15?

FM P40s are OK nothing special, I have 3 but dont want anymore.
I only bought those 3 because of the camo schemes , I love those schemes.

I want HM and Dragon to pulll their collective fingers out and deliver some really cool P40s with really cool schemes, really.

Now I am off to find that oily IXO thread and post.

AArgh I just realized, OFF TOPIC, now look what you made me do Hornchurch!

AND I STARTED THE THREAD.

God Bless America.

Talking Re: Oops an earthquake!!!!

I can remember once sitting there and seeing the walls of the room undulating like waves on the ocean (really weird).

We don't get too many here in Ontario, but we have had a few that I remember. One does stand out. It was a lazy Sunday in the summer and I was sitting on the balcony of my 13th floor (they called it a 'penthouse' to avoid 'lucky 13'!) apartment in Hamilton and all of a sudden the walls went liquid (similar to Skunky's description) and everything started banging back and forth. I just grabbed my house keys and bolted out of there. As I tore down the stairs 2-by-2 in my bare feet, I could see fine-line cracks developing in the walls -- and following me down! Needless to say, I was VERY concerned!!!!! I got to the lobby, everything stopped and I was the only person down there. It's like no one else was home. I found out later that the quake started in Kentucky and all WE got was the aftershock! This was about 1981-3? I can't quite remember. Smartd may remember this, if it wasn't before his time there.

Anyhow, I just can't imagine how you guys live in California. The whole concept of 'earthquake' frightens the 'jebus' out of me. I can image how frightening it would be for guys like Jim and HC -- never really having to deal with this.

Glad to hear all the diecast survived and all are well!!! (Another good excuse for a pint !!)
