Re: Oops an earthquake!!!!

Hey folks,
last night England had an earthquake, 5.1 on the Richter scale.
Ok it was only a small one but I certainly felt the earth move.

There I was viewing the Hanger when I heard a loud rumbling sound!
Lorraines A little bilious tonight I thought, next thing The house was shaking and the detolf cabinet next to me was swaying at an alarming rate.
I was rocking backwards and forwards along with the walls.
Heck is the house falling down, quick grab the Detolf, all my diecast are in danger.

Shriek from Lorraine, who was downstairs at the time, oooo whats happening????

Then all went quiet, the quake stopped.

I thought to myself, wow that was cool, must tell the guys on the forum.
Ah but what it it isn't a quake, hm , yes I would look a bit of an idiot (well more than I normally do) so I thought I will investigate and see if anyone else felt the quake!!

Yup ,its all over todays news.
Lots of chimney pots fell down but thankfully only one person injured.

Anyway the most important thing is that the diecast is ok, although Lorraine was shook up a bit he he in the literal sense also.
Weird experience I must say, so 5.1 eh, it was fun but I would really hate to experience anything more than that, it must be terrifying.
So Jims had a taster of what a quake is like.

Yes, I felt that too. I thought it was me at first, looking at my Vodka and thinking, 'Yep, I'll try this again.' On a serious note, 5.2 on the Richter scale was big enough for me, so how other people cope with higher readings is beyond me. We're not used to this over here, so that was my first experiance, and I'd be a liar if I said it didn't frighten me. No damage though thankfully, so after a few minutes, a few more vodka's, just to settle my nerves you understand.

Re: Oops an earthquake!!!!

Glad everyone is OK Jim, and especially glad to know what your priorities are....Diecast 1st and then worry about the wife.

I remember a thread once about what we would do in the event of something bad happening.

Well I now know what I would do!

SAVE THE DIECAST AT ALL COSTS.

Its Lorraines job to hold up the building while I evacuate the diecast.

Looking back its sort off weird, my first thought was ,hey the detolf is going to break, must stop it swaying about!

By the time I had more rational thoughts it was all over.
It lasted only about 4 or 5 seconds.

When nature strikes it reminds us just how puny and insignificant we humans are.

Those quakes in California were horrendous, so sad when those bridges came down.
I remember seeing it on the TV.
it was just heartbreaking to see those dreadful images.

God Bless America.

And I thought it was going to be a sultry tale of you and the Mrs. I was all set to say well done man, but you blew it.

The jokes about "did the earth move for you too" are already going around.

Thanks for that. It was a toss up, diecasts or vodka. It was like an old black and white Keystone Cops film. Vodka in one hand, holding back the displays with the other, and plenty of taking corners on one leg Still got my chimney thanks.

So has H.C. & he is SHOCKED by how sudden - strong - violent - & mystifying it all was,
..... NEVER having experienced ANYTHING like that before !!!!!!!!!!

The 'Epicentre' of this Earthquake was in Market-Rasen, in Lincolnshire - the county "in-between", that seperates me from Jim.

As my geographical-location is very-close to that part of Lincolnshire (seperated by approx 14-15 miles of North-Sea) the Tremors were incredibly strong..........

I was also viewing M.H.II, when suddenly, from no-where ALL the Doors started rattling-violently, the loft hatch 'banging & poppin' - then it intensified; & I honestly thought the ENTIRE ROOF of my place was about to collapse !!!!!!!!!!
Could feel the walls tremble (!!!!!!!!!) plus the central-heating radiators !!!!!!!!
I honestly though a 'Lorry' had smashed into my house (?) - the really weird thing, is going out into the (pitch-dark) street after 3 minutes LOOKING for an explanation/reason........... = NOTHING ; I just stood there......

Ya have to understand - us 'English' are just NOT used to 'Earthquakes' = they simply just don't happen !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've heard it was varying - 5.2 (to) 5.4 on the scale......whatever; it's frightening & I REALLY pity our "State-side" brethren, who go thru that (& far worse) Tornado's, 'Twisters', Forest-fires & anything else on a large magnitude, that causes damage & loss of life !

I very much agree with you Hornchurch, especially your last two paragraphs. We just don't see half of what our brothers over the water see and experience, so we are just not used to it when we do, though these do seem to be arriving more and more frequently over here.

Re: Oops an earthquake!!!!

Having lived many years in California, I experienced my share of earthquakes while there. I've been thru tornadoes, blizzards, hurricanes and even a fire, but nothing spooks me as much as earthquakes.

There is no warning whatsoever, you go from everything being normal to all of a sudden the world seems to have come off its axis and there's nothing you can do but ride it out and wonder "is this it?". I can remember once sitting there and seeing the walls of the room undulating like waves on the ocean (really weird). The best are the ones that wake you out of a sound sleep in the middle of the night. Very difficult to get back to sleep when your heart's racing about 200 beats per minute.

Glad no P-40s were lost, Jim....

Re: Oops an earthquake!!!!

Jim, over here the Ikea cabinets come with earthquake straps for securing the furniture to the wall. Also, we have 'quake putty', a plasticine like substance for securing items on open shelves. Gives me peace of mind here in shaky Cali!
