Different Era Fighter Jets

I was just wondering, which era jets do you prefer?

I like the planes of the early jet era of the 50's and 60's such as the Phantom, Crusader, Voodoo, Thud, and Sabre.

To me, these airplanes are just beautiful. Sure they are not as sleek as the Eagle, Tomcat, Falcon, or Hornet, but like a great woman, or skydrivergal, they have some nice curves in all the right places.

Re: Different Era Fighter Jets

I am not really into Jets but the 50s was a great time in aviation.

Pushing back the boundaries and still flying by the seat of the pants.
Exciting times.

From a Brits point of view it was the swan song of the British aviation industry.
Back then we still an aviation industry and it was buzzing with great designs and technology.

Then we got a Labour government.

God Bless America.

Re: Different Era Fighter Jets

I like all of them, but I have more profound affinity for the 50's and 60's era jet fighters due in part to the Korean and Middle East aerial conflicts that these fighters have served their masters in an honest to goodness old fashioned style of dogfighting, where flying skills and abilities of a fighter pilot were measured and tested to the max. 'BVR' fighting if you want to call it that just doesn't quite cut it for me even though the advantages and rewards to this form aerial battle is self-evident. Anyway enough rambling, so my favorites are the 50's and 60's era jets.

Re: Different Era Fighter Jets

During the fifties and even into the sixties it was still pilot against pilot, not all electronics where you never even see the enemy and the computers plot your every move. So I far prefer the early Cold War era, but don't forget the F-80, F-84, Mig-15, Mystere, Vautour, SAAB 29 and, of course, the Mig-17.I f we keep giong, we can develop quite a list. Let's see---there's the Panther, Cougar, Voodoo, Hawker Hunter, Vampire, Cutlass, Skynight, Scorpion, Fury, F-100, Yak-25, Su-7---and what about the larger jets---B-47s, Hustlers, B-52s, B-36s, Bisons, Bears, Badgers, Canberras, Vulcans, etc. We have a few of these now, but many have yet to be offered by a quality marketer.

Re: Different Era Fighter Jets

As for the real oldies, I'll take a F-80, F-86, FJ-3/4 Fury. For the 60s era, F4, F100, F105, A-6, A-7, F-8. The B-36, B-47, B-58 are nice as is the B-52.

Re: Different Era Fighter Jets

Yeah, although I don't collect these vigoursly, I do like the 50s models from what I call the 'cold-war' era. Examples would be: B-66, B-47, B-58 (Oh yeah!) for the bombers, then fighters would be: F-89, F-94, F-84, F-102, and my two personal faves: F-86 and T-33. In the British realm, I always loved the Victor, Meteor, Vampire and Hawker Hunter.

Aside from the F-86 (in Golden Hawk colours) I have no jets in my current collection. I MAY add a U.S. F-86 (Korean conflict colours) as I have always been mesmerized by the colour scheme of that frightening era very much.

Sounds like most of us are pretty much on the same page, jets-wise.
