Well, I can't believe anyone (well, Skysurfer alludes to it somewhat in his FM Mirage II discussion) does not mention what should be NUMBER ONE on everyone's list:

GET THE BASIC SHAPE OF THE MODEL RIGHT!!!!

How can any one miss that? That FM Mirage III is the most eggregious example of this flaw in recent memory (at least until now, as it looks like they re-worked the mould now), but others include the Witty F-15 and Su-27 (or the recent Corgi MiG-29 which looks suspect to me, based on what I've seen so far). I can put up with some details being wrong (up to a point, of course), and even some underside small visible screws (sorry Elmer), but the model has to look reasonably like the original; otherwise, no-go. These aren't toys, they are MODELS. I do have to caveat my post, though, by saying that sometimes where basic shape ends and details start is not entirely obvious.

If the shape is right, I don't see any single a-priori deal breakers for me. Price can be a problem, but only if it is not commensurate with quality/detail. Shoot, I'd pay $200 for a 1/48 scale F-14 with the quality of Century Wings and detail appropriate for the larger scale. Usually, only a combination of factors will lead me to outright ignore a given model. Howeve, disrespect for basic shape will do it by itself. Thankfully, it is not a common problem in the indusrty as a whole.

Out of that list - These would be the worst for me

1) Overdone, inked panel lines.

3) Poorly designed canopy with glaring gaps, overly thick frames, etc.

5) A basic lack of detail on the model.

10)Attempts to pass off one mark of a plane for another ( Witty's "FW-190A-5" which is actually an A-8 model )

11)Poor mottling, bad paint job, wrong colors, etc.

12)Hard to justify prices'
