You know, I can pass on a Ronald McDonald look alike. Now, if it was the Kool-Aid man in a cockpit, then I'm sold!

Re: Which Of These Sins Is A Deal Breaker When Considering A Diecast Model?

This is a tough one for me, as any one of these in this long list can crop up at any time and 'pooch' the deal fro me. Naturally, I don't want to be looking at cr@p on my desk, so I do judge this stuff with a discriminating eye, Sloppy work kills it, as does 'weedy' looking models -- you know -- perhaps the landing gear is too spindly when it should be robust or there is 'droopy prop' on the otherwise nicely profiled inline engine.

Really, for me it is hard to nail any one of these.

since the 'post'; been checking the model in question..........

Elmer's thread.....Corgi 1/32 Hurricane "Night-Reaper"

Post No.'s 51 (where in 2 x pix - you can JUST see the 'culprit'; seated) & No.60.

Apparently, "Ronald McDonald" is 'Glued' in place......thereby ruining a Fine & VERY expensive model......

Jeez - If I'm paying nearly £100 ($200) for a class & unique piece of 'Die-Cast'.........

I DON'T want it ruined by a Micheal-Jackson lookalike

"Eh-Heh" - (in Jacksonesque high-pitched tone......) - "Owwww"

Re: Which Of These Sins Is A Deal Breaker When Considering A Diecast Model?

For me it's number 5 and number 12...details and price.

Details mean a lot, whether it is something as simple as a missing piece, or something stupid, like an obviously wrong model depicting a specific variant. An example of this would be Franklin Mint's Swiss and French Mirage III first releases. They simply don't look right, as their rear fuselage is more appropriate for a Trainer Mirage then a fighter one. Franklin Mint has been hit and miss, and though some detail gaffes can't be helped, some just make the model not look right. That's definately a deal breaker for me, why spend good money on a depiction of a plane if it is wrong. This is one reason why I have stayed away from their P-51s, especially after they began to rise in price. P-51Ds have been done to death, with companies offering multiples in 1/72, and 1/32/35. So, I decided to get an EI B to have it represent the Stang in my collection in 1/48. I have Gemini's Ding Hao to represent a Mustang in 1/72, EI's Tex Hill in 1/48 and GMP's Tuskeegee in 1/35. More Mustangs would put me in the nutter category, not to mention the poor house.

Which brings me to Part II. Price. I've gone on a bit of a binge since being in the continental USA, as the substantial cost of living difference has meant I have more money to burn in Zinc. Whereas back in Hawaii, I concentrated on 1/72 and 1/100 for space, with only a few 1/32s and 35s thrown in, here I've gone the opposite tack, and decided to get back into 1/48 in a serious way. I have a few 1/72s, predominantly bombers, with representatives of each major type (spit, hurricane, luftwaffe, US bombers, corsairs, hellcats etc) but most of what I have out and about are 1/48. Still I'll get a 1/72 if the price is right...somewhere under 20, though I occasionally fracture that rule. On the other hand I've really gotten quite a few 1/48s, especially after HM came out with its line. HM really has gone the extra mile in its new 1/48 releases, and their price point is very competitive with FM, EI and C1. My only beef is their otherwise excellent Spit XIV having plastic wingtips, which are easily detachable. HM's 25-49.99 price point is very attractive, especially considering what you get for the money. I don't pay more than 50 for FM's, most of mine have been in the high 20s and 30s range, with my best deal being a Luftwaffe Steinhoff Mig 29 that snaked for the low 20s...plus healthy chunk of change for shipping. GMPs have also been relatively inexpensive as of late, I just picked up Freddy Ohr's Mustang for under $60 plus shipping, while Corgi's Bader Hurricane regularly pops up on Ebay for 35-39.99 plus shipping.

I'll have to figure out a way to put up some pics, both of the Rome Airshow last fall, and of my collection, as I've settled into my new apartment nicely. I must say also that it's nice not having a live in lady complaining about boxes or monopolizing closet space.

Re: Which Of These Sins Is A Deal Breaker When Considering A Diecast Model?

1) Overdone, inked panel lines. What is the measure for being overdone? I like HM's washes.
2) No pilot/crew figures. Would be nice but can live with not having them.
3) Poorly designed canopy with glaring gaps, overly thick frames, etc. I concur
4) Difficult to install and easy to lose "fiddly bits". You never know until you get it, or by word of mouth, Still I can work with it.
5) A basic lack of detail on the model. Agree
6) No stand or a lousy stand. No biggie
7) Wheels-up options, without the appropriate part for the tail wheel( Dragon's FW-190s ). This sucks, the Matchboc collection would have been better with the option of wheels up / wheels down
8) Missing parts like pitot heads, bombs, etc. Wont know till you get it.
9) Obvious gaps where key pieces of the model join together. Definately, but there are exceptions. Corgi Bombers for example.
10)Attempts to pass off one mark of a plane for another ( Witty's "FW-190A-5" which is actually an A-8 model ) Agree
11)Poor mottling, bad paint job, wrong colors, etc. Yep
12)Hard to justify prices. Yep

Aaaaaaaargh! I just noticed that my FM "California Cutie" P-38 had the US insignia put on 'upside down'... !!!!

Oh.... too bad, fly. I have this one, and mine is all right side up, all pad printed, no water-slide decals. This is one of the things that gets me about FM... no consistency, even with models that should be identical.

Re: Which Of These Sins Is A Deal Breaker When Considering A Diecast Model?

I'm not sure there is one particular thing that I look for, or don't when considering a model? If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, its usually good enough for me. I prefer my birds a little less "toy-like" and to have some moving parts (Wheels, propellers, canopies that open.) and that will definitely influenece me.

Usually my influences are in the opposite direction. What will get me to purchase, not what keeps me away. I guess I'm just more positive in nature about my diecast?

Anything for a weird life.

Post Re: Which Of These Sins Is A Deal Breaker When Considering A Diecast Model?

1) Overdone, inked panel lines. Not as bad as trench like panel lines

2) No pilot/crew figures. If they were all like the nine o nine crew fine but the 1:32 Corgi Spit & Hurri piolts YUCK!!

3) Poorly designed canopy with glaring gaps, overly thick frames, etc. A turn off

4) Difficult to install and easy to lose "fiddly bits". Not an issue for me

5) A basic lack of detail on the model. If its the only model of its type (IXO UHU) I will buy it

6) No stand or a lousy stand. Not an issue for me

7) Wheels-up options, without the appropriate part for the tail wheel( Dragon's FW-190s ). Irritating but not a deal breaker

8) Missing parts like pitot heads, bombs, etc. As seven

9) Obvious gaps where key pieces of the model join together. Number one sin.

10)Attempts to pass off one mark of a plane for another ( Witty's "FW-190A-5" which is actually an A-8 model ) It would depend on what it was meant to represent

11)Poor mottling, bad paint job, wrong colors, etc. I usualy pass on these

12)Hard to justify prices' I have learned my lesson on this subject (Corgi Vampire )

I'm sure there are more deal breaking issues, but this should give us a start.

Re: Which Of These Sins Is A Deal Breaker When Considering A Diecast Model?

1) Overdone, inked panel lines. Prefer to have them toned down, but not totally dropped.

2) No pilot/crew figures. Not an issue, I look at pilots figures as an accessory, not a real part of the detail.

3) Poorly designed canopy with glaring gaps, overly thick frames, etc. Agree can be a fairly significant issue

4) Difficult to install and easy to lose "fiddly bits". I do not mind adding these little parts in that they add a little extra detail.

5) A basic lack of detail on the model. Agree, can make a model appear more toy like.

6) No stand or a lousy stand. Preferred, but not a real big issue

7) Wheels-up options, without the appropriate part for the tail wheel. Agree

8) Missing parts like pitot heads, bombs, etc. Agree, makes for a lack of detail issue.

9) Obvious gaps where key pieces of the model join together. Highly agree. Another fault that can make a model look more like a toy.

10) Attempts to pass off one mark of a plane for another. Depends how far off the model variations are. FW 190 models can be a bear with the two styles of rudders and armament setups.

11) Poor mottling, bad paint job, wrong colors, etc. Agree, though a little more forgiving when it comes to mottling.

12) Hard to justify prices. Highly agree. I just do not see the improvement in detail or quality in some of the higher priced models, some in particular have some pretty impressive gaps. Marushin I can justify do to the uncommon choices of some of their models. I do not have any of GMPs models (Wish they had been scale to 1/32nd), but they do look to have a significant jump in quality to justify the price.

13) Parts or features, not to scale. Big one for myself. If feature can be correct not a problem. If not correctable it is a show stopper.

14) exposed screw heads. If recessed and not readily visible ok, but if exposed to plane view, yep and issue.

15) water-slide decals instead of pad printing. Agree

16) blanked out / walled off jet fan intakes (Prop job intakes or radiators). Agree, goes back to a detail issue
