I know what you mean about the early V4 Hondas I think the bikes warranty read something along the lines of it expires at 6 months or 6000 RPM which ever occours first

Thats a hoot Nimrod,

I decided to get back on two wheels some years ago.

There I was up on the moors enjoying the views and then as usually happens down came the rain along with a freezing wind.

Thats when I remembered why I gave up biking way back, that and the fact that people kept trying to knock me off them.

So, come on Jim.....spill the beanz......

What were you 'on' = "Noddy" Velocette L.E. (or hadn't they been "invented" yet 'snigger') - sorry, couldn't resist !

Jim, it's official - "you're a "Light-weight" (re; you're second highlighted-comment above !!!!!!!!!!)
& there was I , thinking you were a "Rufty-Tufty" Yorkshireman !!!!!!!!!

Wassamatter withya ??????????

That A.171 up near you is a 'CRACKING' bit of road.........

One of THE most enjoyable I've ever travelled in England, on my ol' Kawasaki Z.1000-J

I'll see if I can dig out some pix, of the Forest near Hackness - or some shots, near Whitby !!!!!!!!!!

Welcome back jim....glad to know you both came out of the unfortunate "incident" relatively unscathed .....your experience does make me wonder if I should be returning to two wheels, but when the sun is shining & the weather is warm white line fever sets in & I am a lost cause.

Post Re: On two wheels

Here it is....my all time favourite racer the 250cc Honda RC166 6 cylinder DOHC 24 valve jewel of a bike that was first introduced at Monza in late 1964 in a desperate attempt to stop Phil Read on the works Yamaha RD56 air cooled two stroke twin from taking the 250cc world title but with overheating problems & evil handling it was not to be & Read took the title in 1964 & 65.

But once Mike Hailwood swung his leg over the RC166 it was crystal clear the 250cc crown was about to change heads & Mike the Bike aboard the RC166 easily defeated Read in 1966 & 67 despite Read being aboard the super power Yamaha RD05A V4.
The width of the six across the crankcase is a mere 14 inches & presents a frontal profile as narrow as a single cylinder machine, the six con rods are in three matched pairs 1&6, 2&5, 3&4 the centre of the small end of the rods to the big end centre is about the length of a credit card.
The rods are built on to a pressed up crankshaft which has no flywheels so to warm the engine up mechanics usualy keep the tach needle between 14000-16000 rpm with 18000rpm available during racing conditions.

Several (six I think) replicas of the RC166 were built by Bruce Beal circa 2004 each one costing around £250000, the engines for them were built by the French company JPX who build F1 engines,
their chief engineer was blown away by the brilliant engineering of the original engine that JPX used as a copy.
It was he said the most complex engine the company ever had worked on so full of original thinking & technical genius that even with ther computer controlled equipment they were hard pushed to match the quality of the 40 year old original but enough of my wonderings listen & savour a sound like no other YouTube - Honda 250cc six cylinder GP motorbike

Re: On two wheels

He He you got me there Hornchurch,

This hurts but yes I admit to the Noddy bike, it was a pityful Kawasaki 500.
Another thing I have to admit it that the old bones feel the cold more these days.

I went up onto the moors without wearing the full gear and when that rain came and I got all frozen and wet through AND realised it always rains in Yorkshire I thought Jim lad its time to get back into that little sporty car and forget all the return to my youth ideas.

Oh crikey well I may as well admit that I once (for a short time) owned a Velocette.
It was a fairly quick bike in its day but about as reliable as an Austin Allegro!

Well thats me well and truly humiliated amongst the biking fraternity, I shall now go away and hide.

Jim - the 'Noddy' bike was pure guesswork - Hey, & great you took the 'Jest' in Good-Spirit !!!!!!!!!!!

Tell me about the Kawasaki 500.........

was it a Z.500 four-stroke, or one of the Kawasaki 500 'H.1's (two-stroke ?)???????

Your last line (Highlighted) had me roaring with laughter & smiling broadly !!!!!!!!!

4 stroke and I thought it went like a rocket , but then its been about 35 years maybe more since I rode a bike so it probably seemed a lot quicker than it was.
Poor top speed if I remember?

I sort of had an eye on one of the Suzuki Bandits!
I liked the look of those and they are light enough for a relative novice like me to throw around and quick too.

God Bless America.

Hi Jim - the Kawasaki Z.500 was a good bike in it's day (1979/80) but, short-lived........

Was quickly replaced by the Z.550, which in turn, was replaced AND overshadowed, by the GPz 550 (V.nice !)

Nah, it had a decent top-speed alright ! nothing remarkable, but, no-slug !!!!!!!!

As for the Bandits - BOTH are good-bikes. The 600 is 'tame' = the 1200 is 'Fun' & THE one to have !!!!!!!!!!

The 1200 is derived from the ol' GSXR.1100 'lump' (engine), hence the 'wellie' ('zip', 'go', 'bhp' !!!!!!!)

I hope that Nicky Hayden will recover his championship form. Also I would like to see more riders vying for the crown as opposed to Rossi vs. "Lone Challenger"-type of season and tight fight till the end of the season.

All in all, I have to say that MotoGP is by far the best major racing series out there overshadowing its more hyped up contemporaries like NASCAR and single file parade, which is Formula 1 nowadays.

Regards,

Sergey

I am with you on all counts Sergy, of the Honda guys Nicky Hayden is the man most likely to challenge Rossi & Stoner, such a pity that John Hopkins has had such a big off already during pre season testing, I would love to see him do well in the Kawasaki team.
In World Superbikes it will be interesting to se how the new 1200cc Ducati does I have heard they have been having problems with pistons breaking up in pre season tests, its not as if they need the extra cubes as they were a match for any of the four cylinder bikes last year...I am longing to see what Haga can do on the big Yam this weekend
