A case for decent display stands?

Is it just me, or do you sometimes find that a superb diecast model is 'aesthetically disadvantaged' by the display stand provided?

Personally, I think that Corgi display stands (excluding the 'Legends' & round clear plastic ones) are the benchmark by which all others should be measured. Dragon, HM and Witty (also Gemini to some extent) just don't seem to be able to make stands that are worthy of their models .

(In 1/48, C1 should really provide a decent display stand along the lines of that used for the Corgi B25.)

Re: A case for decent display stands?

I DETEST the Legends "stands" personally. However, it is NO problem, as I display the majority of my aircraft on the ground. As far as other stands, I personally have no problem with any of the others, and actually rather like the Gemini's, think they are rather elegant (and the two I have hold the models just fine).

Re: A case for decent display stands?

It is certainly not a big issue for me generally, but I personally think stands should be designed to be as invisible as possible. In other words, a base as small as possible and an arm/cradle for the model as thin or minimal as possible from a safety and engineering standpoint. Ideally, I would prefer the stand let the model appear to be floating or flying through the air.

I have no experience with the other makes, but I do find Corgi's stands to be pretty good, for the most part. Exceptions would be those gross Legends things and their early Propliner stands that were supposed allow some pitch and yaw. Gee, the fitting was so weak, the models wobbled when I crossed the floor!

I agree with as invisible as possible, but I would like to add, it would be nice if they offered as a sideline 3 different heights and a common peg system (like now) with the exception for the 'heavies' which the larger stands are sturdy enough. With a bit of looking at the current system, they could easily do it. I've custom done it and it took very little effort on my part.

In a perfect world -- sturdy clear lucite stands, 3 heights, common connector, offered for sale. Done.

Re: A case for decent display stands?

I agree with all of the statements, above, however I see no signs that the diecast marketers are making any progress in this area. Meanwhile, I have taken to improvising. For example, when I find that the mounting hole in a model is too large for the corresponding part in its stand, I take a section of aluminum tubing, cut it to the right length, sand down the sides if there is a fit issue and slip it over the stand's peg or stump. Usually, this solves the loose fit/wobbly model problem. In cases where the stands are beyond redemption, however, I frequently mix and match across diecast brands. I've also begun to use surplus Easy Model stands, which aren't that bad, by the way, to mount Atlas, Gemini and other models. IXO stands can also be used in this manner and a number of my non-Corgi planes now rest securely, on Corgi stands.
