Roots of this hobby (for me) - early 70's

Here are 4 books I wore out as a kid in the early 1970's. (And I believe they are the root of my interest in this hobby today.)

Both Beekman books - Tanks and Weapons of WWII and Warplanes and Air Battles of WWII - I actually owned in the 70's (and have replaced, as an adult.)

Air war over Hitler's Germany and Carrier War in the Pacific, I never owned as a kid......however I had those 2 continually checked out from our local library.

I was fascinated with the art work and the pics in all 4 of these books. I think my adult interest in diecast is just a continuation of wanting these images in 3 dimensions.

My roots into this hobby extends wayback when I watched the movie "The Blue Max" in 1965 for the first time pretty much started my fascination and addiction for anything on military aviation from then on.

Don't know the roots, perhaps an older brother, but I have been building models since I was 8.
Airfix kits were the thing way back then.

Re: Roots of this hobby (for me) - early 70's

My roots go back to when I was a younger-age teenager, 13 or 14. I was babysitting, and after I got the kids to bed, I found a book that was about WWI aces. I was hooked! Built some models as a teenager, read EVERY aviation book I could get my hands on at the library, and even owned a few. Own quite a few more now, close to four bookshelves worth (and growing!)

Re: Roots of this hobby (for me) - early 70's

Since my father started making me kits and hanging them from the ceiling whey I was around 3 years old, well the bug caught on early for me. Made my first kit when I was 5 years old. One of the kits my father made for me was one of the old Speedy Built F-86s, and it hung from my bedroom ceiling for many years. Tried to pick one of those old kits up off of eBay a couple years back and,,, they are real expensive now. One of those old kits can go up over hundred bucks now. As a kid my room was alway full of airplane, tank and ship models. Lots of fun times, funny thing is,,, things haven't changed that much..
