Re: Roots of this hobby (for me) - early 70's

I was raised as an RCAF brat (surprise) and we spent a lot of time in Arctic postings so the practice was pick out your kits and order them by mail in bulk in the late summer, then spend long cold nights sitting at the kitchen table with your dad building them and listening to the radio since there was no TV up north. Actually we could get Radio Free Europe on the shortwave better than we could get North American broadcasts. Used to have Alerts 2 or 3 times a month and we'd hunker down in the hallways waiting for the all-clear but could still work on the models while sitting out there. I think that may be why I'm still doing this thing, fond memories and good company and a true love of aviation.

I'm only suggesting this because of tank nut- you've seen how he is sober, just imagine him after a few beers...

He is a sloppy one.

Wow...you guys are old LOL...just joking I'm no spring Chicken.

As a child I loved to read about military equipment. I spent every dime I earned mowing grass buying Jane's military books. I finally grew tired of only reading about planes and tanks- why not build them. I can still remember my first model plane, a corsair. My only problem with building models, was finding time. I was in high school and I was busy with school sports, girls, more girls, and studies. In college, I never completely gave up the hobby (maybe built one or two models) yet I truly lacked the time and funds. One day a friend of mine introduced me to Computer Flight Sims. I was hooked all over again and I've never looked back. I have been flying sims for over 12 years. I have given up building models for now, however I am sure once my son is of age I'll start building again. Until then, I'll keep collecting diecast!
