Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

Many of us have enjoyed participating in the various recognition quizzes (" can you name this plane, AFV, weapon," etc.) and I hope these will continue. I thought it might be interesting to start a new quiz which allows anyone who wishes to test us regarding the capabilities of warbirds or any other relevant matter. This may include designer credits, production runs, types of armament, engine power, kill ratios, involvement in famous battles or dogfights, the performance of various aces using a given plane----I could go on and on. Obviously, any era can be the subject of such tests and those posing the questions should be prepared to document their answers, when necessary.

To start the ball rolling here's a rather easy one.

Which of these WWII fighters, counting all marks, was produced in the largest numbers?

1) I-16
2) FW-190
3) Spitfire
4) BF-109
5) Yak 1-9
6) P-51

That's correct. The most common estimate is that 35,000 BF-109s were made of all marks. If you lump all of the Yaks together, from Mks 1-9, and accept the Russian production claims, their total is about 30,000. The next highest, in a three way tie, are the FW-190, Spitfire and I-16-- each coming in at roughly 20'000.

The SM-79, He-111, PBY, B-26 (Midway), IL-4 and the A-20 (Soviets 51st Mine-Torpedo Regiment equiped with A-20 torpedo bomber) all saw operational use if not combat use as a torpedo bomber. I have seen a few references to the Pe-2 carring torpedoes, but nothing firm in regards to actual depiction, picture or weapon loadout reference. So initially would have to go with the PE-2 not see combat or operational use as a torpedo bomber.

That's how I read it. The PE-2 is the only one on that list for which I couldn't find any claims of torpedo use. Of course, the PBY attack on elements of the Japanese fleet during The Battle Of Midway was an act of desperation and was certainly atypical.

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

Here is a two part question.

1. What type aircraft scored Great Britains first aerial victory for WWII.
a. Blackburn Skua
b. Hawker Hurricane
c. Spitfire Mk. I
d. Fairey Battle

2. What was the type aircraft brought down.
a. Dornier Do 18
b. He 111
c. Bf 110

The plane that won was the Hudson. It's victim was a DO-18. The fight took place on October 8, 1939.

I actually came across an aerial victory (Was confirmed later by French sources) that occurred prior to this one.
