Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

Correct. Fortunately for Japanese civilians, Tiger Force took time to organize and arrived too late to see combat.

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

Right again. It took the RAF a while to discover that a glossy black finish on the undersides of their bombers, coupled with matt black on the sides was the best---in their view--camouflage, particularly to hide planes from AA gunners. Nivo, had a slight sheen to it but wasn't glossy enough to reflect light to the desired degree. Later, the Brits applied the same lesson to maritime and, especially, anti-sub, patrols, except rather than black, they used white in the same manner.

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

OK. Here's another one on the same subject:

During WWII's conflict between the Soviets and Hitler's minions, Russian combat planes---and fighters in particular--- often sported an upper surface disruptive camouflage pattern of black and green. This was especially evident between 1941 and 1943, but continued to a lesser extent afterwards. How did the Soviets devise this relatively unusual camouflage scheme?

1) Black and green were the best colors to hide a plane flying over Russia's many forests.
2) Since the Germans used a two-tone gray camouflage on their fighters, the Russians felt that black and green provided a much needed differentiation.
3) The factories turning out Soviet fighters ran short of brown paint but had plenty of black---so they used it.

And another:

Israel's IAI Kfir jet fighter was born from a marriage of the basic French Mirage airframe with a GE J79 turbojet engine. What visible external feature most distinguishes the Kfir from its parent, the Mirage?

Returning to WWII:

Poland's PZL-11 fighters and more developed variants, won many export orders. Two of these countries did not use the PZL fighters in their air arms. Can you name them?

1) Hungary
2) Romania
3) Greece
4) Finland
5) Yugoslavia

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

Remaining in the "modern era", here's one about sales pitches:

Which of the following warbirds was aptly touted by this manufacturer's slogan, "A whole air force in one man's hands"?

1) F-104
2) F-111
3) F-16
4) F-106
5) F-105

5) F-105 ? I believe the slogan came from Robin Olds.
